Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "How should we approach The History of the Five Indian Nations today? The book's information-rich as it is-should be critically interrogated and placed in social, political, and cultural context. The book reflects the outlook of a colonial British agent and, in a more general sense, of early modern European and Euro-American culture. Its claims of empirical objectivity should be historicized."-John M. Dixon, "Imperial Politics, Enlightenment Philosophy, and Transatlantic Print Culture" "The History of the Five Indian Nations remains an invaluable font of information for understanding the Iroquois during the decades before European invaders began to pour into the Longhouse. Colden's account of Iroquois military and diplomatic exploits is studded with fascinating details. It illuminates internal and external political dynamics as well as the extent and limits of European colonial power. Colden did not necessarily comprehend the cultural logic that guided Iroquois people, but he appreciated them as agents-remarkably audacious ones-in the affairs of all of eastern North America."-Karim M.Tiro, "Iroquois Ways of War and Peace" Cadwallader Colden's History of the Five Indian Nations Depending on the Province of New-York in America, originally published in 1727 and revised in 1747, is one of the most important intellectual works published in eighteenth-century British America. Colden was among the most learned American men of his time, and his history of the Iroquois tribes makes fascinating reading. The author discusses the religion, manners, customs, laws, and forms of government of the confederacy of tribes composed of the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas (and, later, the Tuscaroras), and gives accounts of battles, treaties, and trade with these Indians up to 1697. Since Cornell University Press first reprinted Colden's History in 1958, the book has served as an invaluable resource for scholars and students interested in Iroquois history and culture, Enlightenment attitudes toward Native Americans, early American intellectual life, and Anglo-French imperial contests over North America. The new Critical Edition features materials not previously included, such as the 1747 introduction, which contains rich and detailed descriptions of Iroquois culture, government, economy, and society. New essays by John M. Dixon and Karim M. Tiro place The History of the Five Indian Nations Depending on the Province of New-York in America in historical and cultural context and provide a balanced introduction to the historic culture of the Iroquois, as well as their relationship to other Native people. The new Critical Edition of The History of the Five Indian Nations Depending on the Province of New-York features materials not previously included. Essays by John M. Dixon and Karim M. Tiro place Colden's work in historical and cultural context. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Maps, portraits, Engravings (illustrator). First Edition. New York: W.A. Davis, Printed by Order of the Corporation of New York. 1825 [-1826] Colden, Cadwallader D. Memoir, Prepared at the Request of a Committee of the Common Council of the City of New York, and Presented to the Mayor of the City, at the Celebration of the Completion of the New York Canals. Illustrated with hand-colored maps, portraits, engraved & lithographic plates, being 44 of 47 original plates [46 as listed in binder's directions; the 47th one, often not listed, being the Bakers Benefit Society engraving - scarce, but present here.] E-mail a request for the complete list of included "plates" (term includes maps), but here they do include the sought-after canal profile fold-out and the hand-colored New York State map (nearly identical to the Anthony Finley 1824 map, with three small modifications; here including, as well, a number of New York City Fire Company individual engravings and related text pages; Canal scenic engravings and Grand Celebration engravings, including the main 7-fold fold-out engraving; plus 9 facsimile manuscript letters bound at end from notables including Thomas Jefferson; includes at least 3 plates by George Catlin. Laid in are two circa-1960s auction results referring to the existence of 47 "plates". 10x7-3/4, original boards, contents loose within in the form of several integral signatures; rebacked. Peters, America., pp.228-232; Pearce, Early. 66; Howes C562 - One of the first recorded American books illustrated with lithographs, this one being produced from Anthony Imbert's company, following Grammar of Botany produced by Barnet & Doolittle in 1822 & a plate produced for the Analectic Magazine in 1819. A highly important book, commemorating the greatest feat in early American engineering history, the opening of the Erie Canal connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, among some 400 miles or more of canal-building. Also contains magnificent lithographic plates drawn by George Catlin, including the superbly illustrated Lockport plates. Additionally there is the hand-colored folding map, the one of the state of New York with a profile of the Grand Canal. Formerly (sea captain) H.P. Osborn's copy, with his engraved bookplate at front pastedown, also so stamped in ink to a front flyleaf and inscribed "To Osborn, Esq. Darling Master of his Brittanick Majestys Packer Swallow." Also, there is important manuscript material pasted within the book: An autograph letter signed from the Mayor of New York, Philip Hone, dated 4 October 1826, presenting this book and an award to Osborn to commemorate the canal celebration. Also, a second mounted ALS from Hone reports on the difficulty in finding a bound copy of the book for Mr. Osborn, and there is a mounted autograph presentation slip from the Mayor as well in a later part of the text. Mounted to the reverse of the "Fireworks" plate is a printed acknowledgement to the crew of the Swallow from the Mohawk Insurance Company for preventing fire destruction of the Schuylkill. Missing some plates, but with highly interesting provenance from a player in the canal project. Scuffed, spine defective; many quires and gatherings loose & sprung, expert repairs to versos of some plates, occasional foxing most notably at facsimile letters, else a good copy wanting restoration & rebinding, or perhaps individual re-sale or gifting of the plates and their associated text pages to interested parties. lg3. Two Signed ALS.

Hardcover. First Edition. Quarto (7-3/4" x 9-3/4"), bound in full gilt-decorated calf leather with the city seal blindstamped on both covers, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down; v, [3], 408, [2] pages. Illustrated with the 47 listed lithographs, many folding, including 2 large folding hand-colored maps, as well as 8 lithographed facsimiles of testimonial letters by John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette, and a few lithographs not listed. All lithographs were executed by Anthony Imbert, whom Harry Peters called the pioneer lithographer of New York City, after drawings by Asher B. Durand and others, including at least 3 by George Catlin. One of the first recorded American books illustrated with lithographs. Howes C-562; American Imprints 20118; Peters, America on Stone, pp. 228-232. An important volume, commemorating the greatest feat of American engineering to that date, the opening of the Erie Canal connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. This copy with the name in gilt on the front cover of Samuel L. Mitchill. There is a portrait of Mitchill in the book engraved by Asher Durand. The front endpaper contains an inscription by Mitchill dated 1827 to his brother, Singleton, mentioning that he had received two copies of the book and was giving him this one. On the next blank page is an inscription dated 1849 by Singleton to his grandson. At the end of the book are bound a number of blank pages but for two which contain manuscript descriptions of Signals for the Grand Canal Celebration Fleet of Steam Gallies, with several small watercolors of flags. Samuel L. Mitchill was a founding editor of The Medical Repository, the first medical journal in the United States, as well as a member of both the United States Congress and Senate. Mitchill strongly endorsed the building of the Erie Canal, sponsored by his friend and political ally DeWitt Clinton, and gave a speech at its dedication. Mitchill suggested renaming the United States of America Fredonia, combining the English "freedom" with a Latinate ending. His suggestion was not taken seriously, though some towns took on the name. He was known for his widespread knowledge, Thomas Jefferson considering him the "Congressional Dictionary." Light to moderate foxing, but generally a Near Fine and special copy of this rare and attractive book.

2 Volumes. 12mo. pp. xii, [4], 260; 2 p.l., 251, [9]ads. folding engraved map. contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, endpapers preserved (some light foxing to map & outer leaves). Third London Edition of the first general history of the Iroquois First Nations, with discussion of their manners and customs, forms of government, wars and treaties, and the current state of their trade and alliance with the British nation. The Five Tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy lived south of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Erie, for the most part in the present-day state of New York, extending by 1700 north into present-day Canada, west along the Great Lakes and south on both sides of the Allegheny mountains, and into the Ohio Valley. The alliance comprised the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca peoples, and after 1722 the Tuscarora people as well. Cadwallader Colden was surveyor-general of New York and first colonial representative to the Iroquois Confederacy; he eventually served as lieutenant governor of New York after 1761. The original edition of Colden's history, published in New York in 1727, the first historical work to be printed there, is basically unobtainable, being known in only ten copies according to Streeter. Large additions were incorporated into the first London edition of 1747, including a map, 'Papers relating to Fur Trade which Colden had edited and published in New York in 1727, and a section on Pennsylvanian Indian affairs which Colden had not written, together with the text of various charters relating to Pennsylvania, from that of William Penn up until 1701.Dionne II 81.
