Azevedo e Samodães e Inocêncio têm a colação errada. Cabral do Nascimento no seu estudo e antologia «Poemas narrativos portugueses» não refere esta obra. Poema épico em latim narrando o célebre feito da vitória alcançada no socorro e levantamento do cerco à cidade de Diu na Índia, em 1546, pelo Vice-Rei D. João de Castro. Esta grande vitória militar garantiu a estabilidade das possessões portuguesas na Índia até 1961 e tornou-se um feito mítico narrado e celebrado por inúmeros poetas e escritores entre eles Diogo de Teive, Damião de Góis, Jacinto Freire de Andrade ou D. José Barbosa. D. João de Castro foi uma das mais notáveis figuras do Século XVI em Portugal, distinguindo-se como cientista, navegador, combatente, vice-rei da Índia e escritor. Valiosa peça bibliográfica pela grande raridade, beleza da impressão, qualidade dos materiais, importância histórica do feito cantado pelo poeta e pela qualidade literária. Seria desejável um estudo e tradução de obra poética tão importante e relevante. Stockler, escritor do início do século XIX, considera que não é inferior às melhores producções poeticas da maior parte dos nossos humanistas latinos e pelo mesmo motivo, Inocêncio abre uma excepção e refere esta obra no seu Dicionário bibliográfico, donde excluiu as obras escritas em Latim. Copy with an Ex-libris of Fernando Barros, numbered 1411, glued inside the front board and ownership title on the front page: «Miguel Osorio. Lisboa». First and only edition, very rare, that it isn?t seen on the market for many years. It is not included in the catalogues of bookshops or auction houses. Azevedo, Samodães and Inocêncio have the wrong collation. Cabral do Nascimento in his study and anthology ?Poemas narrativos portugueses? doesn?t mention this work. Latin epic poem, telling the story of the victory at Diu in India in 1546 by the Vice-Roy D. João de Castro. This huge military victory assured the stability of the Portuguese possessions in India until 1061 and it became a mythical achievement, celebrated by several poets and writers, among them Diogo de Teive, Damião de Góis, Jacinto Freire de Andrade or D. José Barbosa. D. João de Castro was one of the most famous figures of the 16th century in Portugal, renown as scientist, navigator, fighter, India?s vice-Roy, and writer. A valuable bibliographic piece for its rarity, beautiful printing, quality of the materials, historical importance of the theme, and literary quality. Cortes das folhas carminados. Magnífico exemplar impresso em papel de linho muito alvo, preserva grande sonoridade do papel e margens muito generosas. No primeiro volume apresenta trabalho de traça marginal, perfeitamente restaurável, que atinge as págs. 197 a 232. Impressão com tiragem de 500 exemplares. Obra única no seu género, de grande importância para a compreensão dos conceitos historiográficos vigentes nesta época e para o conhecimento da história diplomática da Europa, de acordo com as fontes portuguesas. Contém a história detalhada da ida para o Oriente dos padres Teatinos, com a sua passagem pelo Cáucaso e pelo Golfo Pérsico, na procura da evangelização do Extremo Oriente ou Índia Oriental. A Regra Teatina foi a primeira regra clerical e regular a ser fundada em Roma em 1524, com o nome de Congregação dos Clérigos Regulares da Divina Providência, cujos membros são conhecidos como "teatinos". Na página 69 desta obra encontra-se a lista, ou catálogo, de varões ilustres desta religião até ao ano de 1782. A referida lista principia com São Caetano de Tiene, fundador da Sagrada Religião dos Clérigos Regulares e canonizado pelo Papa Clemente X. A expansão missionária para o Oriente dos Clérigos Regulares, ou Ordem Teatina, começou em 1626 com uma primeira missão ao Cáucaso, particularmente na Geórgia, que era de religião ortodoxa e dominada politica e militarmente pela presença otomana. O Padre Pedro Avitabile e outros religiosos viajaram por mar e por terra, alcançando a Geórgia e conseguindo a conversão de seus reis e bispos ortodoxos, que reconheceram o Papa Urbano VIII. Em 1639 o Padre Avitabile voltou a Roma, procurando a aprovação dos seus planos apostólicos. (vide vol. I, pág. 78 e seguintes sobre ?A Entrada da Religião dos Clérigos Regulares nas terras do domínio da Coroa Portuguesa?). Todo este capítulo aborda a vida e missão do Venerável Padre D. Pedro Avitabile, tendo sido ele o promotor da ideia e todos os sucessos desta missionação (vide vol. I, pág. 107, col. 1). Os seus pedidos e súplicas para a missão ao Oriente corriam desde 1635 na Congregação para a Propagação da Fé, em Roma. O autor declara que os portugueses tinham perdido o poder e as possessões e era a própria ordem Teatina que intervinha no restabelecimento da evangelização. A ordem usou meios próprios e as suas bases na Geórgia ?onde tinham fundado tantas Missões, com tanto fruto daqueles povos? (vol. I, pág. 115, col. 2). Daí os missionários foram por terra até ao Estreito de Ormuz na Pérsia, (vide vol. I, pág. 112, 1ª col). A partir daí recusaram a ida em navios da Armada Portuguesa ou navios comerciais portugueses, preferindo seguir viagem a bordo de navios maometanos (vide vol. I, pág. 113). Esta ordem procurava sobrepor-se à influência portuguesa e chegar ?onde não tinha chegado o valor dos portugueses? (pág. 166, col 2). Em 15 de Outubro de 1640 chegaram a Goa, na Índia Portuguesa. A obra contém além da história dos clérigos regulares, também a História de Portugal, que a mesma ordem regular testemunhou ao longo dos séculos, desde a sua vinda para Portugal no tempo do Cardeal Rei D. Henrique. O autor faz a descrição de bibliotecas famosas (como a dos Medicis I, 339); a vida do Padre Rafael Bluteau ?que foi uma grande luz do orbe literário e da religião Teatina? (I, 283); a vida do padre António Caetano de Sousa (II, 274); e outros padres principais dos Teatinos. As biografias encontram-se sempre relacionadas com o seu tempo e com a História de Portugal e da Europa como, por exemplo, a longa querela diplomática sobre a demarcação dos limites ou fronteiras do Brasil e das possessões portuguesas na América do Sul (II, 107). Esta obra é uma das fontes do Dicionário Bibliográfico Português de Inocêncio (Vol. I pág. XLVIII): «MEMORIAS HISTORICAS CHRONOLOGICAS DA SAGRADA RELIGIÃO DOS CLERIGOS REGULARES em Portugal e suas conquistas, por D. Thomas Caetano de Bem. Lisboa, na Regia Off. José Barbosa, D. António Caetano de Sousa, D. Luis Caetano de Lima etc. etc. São particularmente interessantes e noticiosas as vidas de D. Manuel Caetano de Sousa e D. Luis Caetano de Lima. Na do primeiro o cronista soube habilmente aproveitar-se da viagem que o seu confrade empreendeu á Itália indo assistir ao capítulo geral da ordem, para dar notícia de muitas antiguidades preciosas, de muitos livros e manuscritos raros, existentes nas liv.
