RARE in commerce. The German-born American economist & sociologist, Werner J. Cahnman (1902-1980) studied law and political science at the universities of Munich and Berlin, receiving his doctorate under Otto von Zwiedineck-Sudenhorst. While working at the Berliner Industrie- und Handelskammer and at the Kieler Institut fur Weltwirtschaft und Seeverkehr he became a lecturer at the Judische Lehrhaus and became legal counsel for the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith in Bavaria. He was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the Dachau concentration camp in 1938 but was soon freed by the intervention of his teacher Karl Haushofer. Emigrating to the United States, he studied anthropology and sociology, and taught at several universities before being appointed professor of sociology at Rutgers University. He wrote on international ecology and then in the fields of sociological theory and sociology of the Jews. His publications include "Role and Significance of the Jewish Artisan Class", "How Cities Grew", "Voelker und Rassen im Urteli der jugend" (an analysis of the attitude of German youth toward Jews and the Third Reich). His later works include "Ferdinand Toennier on Sociology" and "Jews and Gentiles. A Historical Sociology of Their Relations".
