First issued in January 1955, the MATTACHINE REVIEW became just the second American magazine published by and for the gay and lesbian community. It intentionally provided a "milder," more conservative alternative to ONE Magazine, founded two years earlier, in the belief that homosexuality would ultimately gain social acceptance through education and bridge-building. The editor, Harold "Hal" Call, who had been arrested on morals charges in 1952, did not appear on the masthead until August, 1956, although he contributed many of the articles in early issues pseudonymously. In this issue, The Hustlers, A Story and a book reviews of "Havelock Ellis: Artist of Life", and two biographies of A.E. Housman.
