Finanzminister Graf von Cancrin (Jegor Franzewitsch Kankrin; 1774-1845) aus Hanau folgte nach dem Jurastudium 1796 seinem Vater, der sich durch zahlreiche Schriften zur Berg- und Salzwerkskunde einen Namen gemacht hatte, nach Russland und wurde zunächst sein Gehilfe in den Salinen von Staraja-Russa. Danach erhielt er eine Anstellung im Innenministerium. Seine Schriften zur Kriegswissenschaft erregten die Aufmerksamkeit von Alexander I. Im Vaterländischen Krieg gegen Napoleon machte er schnell Karriere und stieg auf zum Generalintendanten der gesamten russ. Armee. 1821 erhielt er seine Berufung in den Reichsrat und 1823 wurde er Finanzminister. Als Finanzexperte zählte er mit den Landsleuten Ludwig Heinrich von Jacob, Christian von Schlözer und Heinrich Friedrich Storch zur "deutsch-russischen Schule" der Nationalökonomie. Auch dank seiner Förderung konnte Alexander von Humboldt 1829 seine Forschungsreise in den Ural und Altai durchführen. Im Oktober 1843 besuchte er den Gelehrten, "dessen Geist, Lebendigkeit, Suade und Namensgedächtniß nicht gewichen sind" in Potsdam( siehe Teil 2, S. 76). Sein Enkel Alexander Graf Keyserling (1815-1885), Kurator der Universität in Dorpat, schreibt im Vorwort, dass "ein sehr umfangreiches Manuscript, welches in Form eines Tagebuches während mehrer Reisen im Auslande von dem Verstorbenen niedergeschrieben wurde, in seine Hände kam und in ihm den Gedanken anregte, es durch den Druck zu veröffentlichen".
