Rafael Canogar ha recibido importantes nombramientos: Miembro de la Junta Directiva del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, Madrid 1983-1986, Miembro del Consejo Asesor de la Dirección General de Bellas Artes del Ministerio de Cultura, Madrid 1981-1982 y 1983-84, Miembro del Patronato del Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo, Madrid 1983 y Vocal del Consejo de Administración del Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid 1984-1990. Su obra no se puede clasificar dentro de un estilo determinado pero tres serán los rasgos que no le abandonarán durante su carrera: el gesto, la materia y el color. Estos elementos siempre estarán presentes en la estética informal, figurativa y abstracta.
