In 1853 Capron went to California as a commercial agent of several large mercantile houses in New York City. He visited the principal cities and villages of the state, and traversed the various mining regions. Besides an in-depth description of San Francisco's lurid side, he gives definitions of various mining techniques, and description of the miners' court, miners' home, and Chinese exclusion. "This work gives extensive treatment to the Mexican War and the conquest of California. Part two gives a detailed description of San Francisco, and part three a description of the gold mines of California" - Hill.254. Then he gives details of the mining boom, Chinese exclusion, miner's court and their living conditions. The last portion contains his well written journal from N.Y. to Nicaragua to California. Also extensive treatment of the Mexican War and conquest of California. First editio…n of book; second issue of the Colton map (dated 1854 rather than 1853). "This is the same map as that listed as 1853 - Colton, save for the change in date. It seems also to have been included in "Colton's Atlas of the World.by George W. Colton".This was probably the best-known map of California in the eastern states during the 'fifties. It was republished annually for a time, with little or no change" (Wheat). "In April, 1853, the author proceeded to California, as the commercial agent of several extensive mercantile houses in New York city. In the discharge of the duties of his commission, he visited the principal cities and villages of the state.He also traversed various parts of the mining regions, and sojourned with the miners, among their valleys and mountains" (Preface). The first three parts of the four parts of the book are devoted to a "History of California", including an "extensive treatment to the Mexican War and the conquest of California" (Hill); a colorful "Description of San Francisco"; The book also includes a colorful description of San Francisco"; and "Gold Mines, Mining, and Miners".
