First published in 1858 and illustrated by Harrison Weir. This edition is uncommon. (Schwerdt 150 for1st ed). (Folio, 12.8*18.6). Drayson had been a professor at the Military Academy at Woolwich, an explorer, and the author of fiction and travel books. WOLF J (illustrator).

Spine ends and corners rubbed, leather otherwise sound and supple; edges of boards show wear. A stub preceding half-title suggest removal of free fly with wrting as does small neat cut on rear ffl. Pp 101-2 corners cut, 171-2 torn at bottom, likewise 211-14; none of these defects impact text. A complete edition of this book calls for 8 chromolithographed color plates & 1 black and white plate; this volume has only 7 color platesthat called for at page 193, "Elephants in the Open" is lacking. There is no stump or indication of cutting, the adjacent page 192 shows what appears to be trimming at its for-edge which suggests the possibility of a binding error. Library stamp "Libreria Aldo Manuzio, Venezia".
