    Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd edition . Gift inscription written on the front free end paper page. 2nd edition, 1860. Publication of 327 pages. Full leather. There is gilt on the spine and on the covers, with 5 raised bands. Marble pages on the first and last pages, as well as around the edges of the book. The boards are a little shelf rubbed. There is foxing on the early and last few pages, little within the body of the book. The text is legible. The binding is excellent. In good condition considering the age of the book (1860). GK. Spine, gilt tooling and titles, edges worn slightly. Internal, half title, frontis, [5], (vi-xiv), [1], 2-327 pp, 8 pls (B&W), green endpapers, pencil name to fpd (Harvey), small embossed bookseller stamp to ffep, text block edges sprinkled red, printed by Cox and Wyman, Great Queen Street, London. First published in 1858 and illustrated by Harrison Weir. This edition is uncommon. (Schwerdt 150 for1st ed). (Folio, 12.8*18.6). Drayson had been a professor at the Military Academy at Woolwich, an explorer, and the author of fiction and travel books.

Illustrated by Harrison Weir, from designs by the author. 8vo, one-half polished red calf and marbled boards; spine with raised bands gilts and Morocco label gilt; edges trimmed and sprinkled; tan coated end papers: (half title, i-xiv, 1-327 including an addendum on the Kaffir langugae. Spine ends and corners rubbed, leather otherwise sound and supple; edges of boards show wear. A stub preceding half-title suggest removal of free fly with wrting as does small neat cut on rear ffl. Pp 101-2 corners cut, 171-2 torn at bottom, likewise 211-14; none of these defects impact text. A complete edition of this book calls for 8 chromolithographed color plates & 1 black and white plate; this volume has only 7 color platesthat called for at page 193, "Elephants in the Open" is lacking. There is no stump or indication of cutting, the adjacent page 192 shows what appears to be trimming at its for-edge which suggests the possibility of a binding error. Library stamp "Libreria Aldo Manuzio, Venezia".

Mendelssohn 486: 'An account of hunting and sporting experiences in Kaffraria and Natal. The author joined a party of Boer hunters who were making an excursion into the plains under the Drekensburg mountains, near the sources of the Mooi river. He remarks on the wonderful eyesight possessed by these people and their contempt for the English as sportsmen. . . There is a good account of the natives with many notes of the fauna of the country.' Later editions were issued with only black and white plates. A picture of this book is available on request.
