Few men knew the hazards of the 23,000 mile round trip voyage.

The bindings have gilt lines and title labels to spines and marbled boards. There is general rubbing to surfaces and edges with fraying and small loss of leather at spine ends and corners and some paper loss at the edges. The spine joints have wear and there is some splitting at the front spine joint of Vol I at the bottom although the bindings are currently sound. Corners with some turning with a bump to the top back corner of Vol II. The title label of Vol II has small loss at the top. Contents: Vol I: pencil inscription to fep; sixpenny stamp from reign of Edward VII (1901-1910) at the top of initial blank; frontispiece; title; dedication 2pp; preface 2pp; contents pp iv-xv; folding map; text pp 1-524; final blank. Vol II: pencil inscription to front endpaper; initial blank; frontispiece; title; contents pp iii-viii; text pp 1-498; appendices pp 499-515; errata 1 p; final blank. Both volumes have general marking and spotting particularly in the margins. This is more pronounced in Vol I. The map has an old repair at the attachment. Vol II has some rough page opening with slight loss at the side margins of pp 91/2, 235/6, 329/330, 331/2. There is some staining to the rear endpapers of Vol II and a small tear at the bottom edge of the rear free endpaper.
