Quarto. Limited to 350 copies. Gold coloured textured and patterned paper covered boards back with tan linen; cream coloured title label mounted to the spine. The fore and bottom edge of the text block have been roughly trimmed. Illustrated with five colour plates. Small abrasion to the front board. Light sun fading to the spine and near the top edge of the boards. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. An overall very good copy. An attractively produced book with an introduction by Edith M. Coulter.

Spine damage with loss, part of spine with part of title details loosely inserted in book. Front hinge broken. The frontis & full page illustrations are foxed & two have small edge nicks at margins. Folding plates clean with tear to lower part of one. Repaired on rear of plate. This is the rare first edition of the first published record of the 1818. Frontispiece is 10-panel fold-out map, 472pp., 2-page map of Gambier Islands on page 180, multi-panel fold-out map of the Polar Sea/Part of North West Coast of America at pp. 458-458, and 13 plates inserted as listed. Vol II: iv. Ten plates, including three 2-page plates are inserted as listed, 452pp. A New Edition. In Two Volumes. Very good early edition books. Half leather with marbled paper on boards. Spines have five flat bands, double-edged in gilt and with gilt lettering in the second and fourth sections. Boards, folds and edges have scuffs and rubs. External page edges are age- and soil-darkened, may have been red-speckled at one point. Front paste-down of Vol I has small bookseller's label, pencilled owner's name and pencil erasure marks. Previous owner's name on FFEP of Vol II. Both front inside hinges are cracked but holding. Back inside hinges are partially cracked and also holding. End papers as well as several front- and back-most pages of both volumes are grubby and with some foxing. Title pages have horizontal lines drawn in the upper right corners. Minimal and intermittent foxing on text pages. Some light foxing on fold-out maps and plates. Text pages are age-toned. Text blocks are snug. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Additional photos available at your request.
