Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A collection of short accounts by the officers and men of all ranks who fought on Attu, the westernmost island of the Aleutians. This string of islands, "acquired by the United States in 1867 as part of the Alaska Purchase," extended some one thousand miles west from the mainla…nd of Alaska. Only about 600 miles from Siberia and about 650 miles from a Japanese base in the Kurile Islands, Attu had a grand total in population some 45 native Aleuts and two mainland Americans. The climate here was described as unpleasant: Engulfed in fog most of the time, which could usually not be dispersed by the frequent high winds. The terrain here was described as a nasty combination of "steep, jagged crags, knifelike ridges," and "boggy tundra." All of these elements together arguing against the use of aircraft and vehicles. To top off all of that physical description, "One writer has called Attu 'the lonesomest spot this side of hell.'" As if all of the foregoing were not enough, American forces were faced off against the tough and experienced Japanese in armed combat. This little book testifies to the valor of all of these men. In his preface, the author states that there have been so many books about Egypt, but that his intent is to describe Egypt as it is, not as it was. He focuses on changes made in Egypt under the ruler (of the day) Mohammed Ali. Ali (1769 - 1849) is…now considered to be the founder of modern Egypt and is best remembered for his attempts to modernize the country by reforming the military, economy, and culture. He also initiated a violent purge of the Mamluks, who had a hold over Egypt before his rule began. The author also includes a discussion of Candia, which had recently come under Egyptian rule. (Candia refers to the Venetian name for Crete at that time.) During his military career the author had traveled in Crete and Syria. The two volumes are bound in nineteenth century three quarter black leather with marbled paper covers and endpapers. Leather is bumped and lightly rubbed. Marbled covers are scuffed. Text pages have browning and aging throughout but are quite legible. Ownership signature of Arthur Stanley Bride to top of title page. Bride (1804 - 1867) was an Irish author who wrote a medieval historical novel about Edrick the Saxon. Volume I has frontis and two plates; Volume II has frontis, one plate, and fold-out map with the plan for Karnak. Very good. Small octavos. Volume I: 348 pages; Volume II: 358 pages. GREEK/032921.

Unique photo album documenting Sta…ff Captain Köhler's service at the P.E.A in Potsdam. We have no information about when Köhler started to serve there, but we know that it must have ended in October 1940, as the souvenir photo-album bears that date. Köhler's rank (Hauptmann beim Stabe, the equivalent of Staff Captain in the US Army) was the highest military rank in the Wehrmacht for specialist officers. The first five photographs depict him in company of other German officers (Leaves 1 to 5). The following 16 photographs depict Köhler with his unit during maneuvers (leaves 6 to 21). The stunning 14 photographs between leaves 22 and 32 document the State funeral of German Admiral Adolf von Trotha (1868-1940), including two photographs showing Adolf Hitler paying his respects before the Admiral's casket. Another silver gelatin print shows the Führer's wreath at the Cenotaph. The last three photographs in this series show Köhler among other officers of his unit at the grave of von Trotha. The original photograph pasted on leaf 33 is a rather surprising one as it shows our Wehrmacht officer in what appears to be his office, standing next to a lamb! The last three silver gelatin prints depict gorgeous views of the Sanssouci Park and Palace (leaves 34 to 36). Except for leaf 22 which has three 3 3/4 x 2 3/4 photographs, all the other leaves have one original photograph each (size 7 x 5" or 5 x 7"). All leaves are tissue-guarded. [WITH] 10 smaller loose photographs (size varying from 4 x 2 3/4" to 3 1/2 x 5") depicting Köhler with other German officers. Includes one showing a seated Köhler next to the same lamb featured on leaf 33, and two showing him on the Eastern Front. These two photographs are handcaptioned by himself at verso, and dated January and February 1942. [WITH] An early 20th-century 4 x 2 1/2" albumen print from Berlin-based photographer Max Piepenhagen depicting a German soldier in full Imperial uniform. The photograph could be Köhler himself at the outbreak of WWI. Minor and sporadic rubbing along edges of photo album. Leaf 34 detached but present. Title and captions in German. Album in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good, original photographs in very good condition.

First Edition. 224pp. A completely unique and historically important source copy of a diary of the defence at Lucknow (circa 1860) with a provenance of the Anglo-Indian collection of Wilfred Partington. The original diary with original paper-covered boards has been handsomely re-bound in… half-brown morocco leather and blue cloth boards with a gilt embossed title that simply reads 'The Defence of Lucknow with MS marginalia'. Two new front endpapers and rear endpapers have been bound in - in front of and behind the original boards. The front endpaper appears to have itself been written in manuscript by the author, editor and collector - Wilfred Partington. On this page he introduces/describes the MS diary. We will copy this page in full as a brief overview of the MS book/diary. " A valuable source copy. 1. 'Staff-Office', the author of this book, was Captain Wilson, vide Kaye, Malleson, & Rice Holmes. 2. The numerous MS. marginalia were written by Captain Wilson Himself, Vide statement on p1. and also the eye-witness account of the wounding of Sir Henry Lawrence which could have only been written by Wilson. 3. This copy is clearly the one annotated by the author for Sir John Kaye, vide Sepoy Wart (?) (1876) Vol III p.540n. Its marginalia adds interesting and graphic information about the historic siege - eg those on pp. 46, 78 and 161, 175, 82, 158. Compare Kaye's quotation re Captain Fulton with the MS. notes here on pp 158 and 159. 4. This copy was lent to and largely used by Michael Joyce for his Ordeal at Lucknow: the Defence of Residency (1938), vide p.381 of that work - Wilfred Partington. The original title page of the published diary is missing. Instead a new title page using the scrap from an advertisement of 'The Defence of Lucknow: a Diary recording the Daily events of the siege from 31st May to 25th September 1857' has been pasted on to this inserted title page. This page has been boarderd in red ink and within it lie very neat ink writing in a different hand to Partington's. Sadly we do not know whose hand this is, but he/she states, 'The notes in this book were written by Captain Wilson Deputy Assistant- Adjutant-General. For evidence of this refer to note on top of page 1 and to his description on page 2/3. On page 209 it says of this officer that he was ever to be found where shot was flying thickest, and I am at a loss to decide whether his services were more invluable owing to the untiring physical endurance and bravery which he displayed, or to his ever-ready and pertinent counsel and advice in moments of difficulty and danger.' (appendix iv). About as close as you can get to the siege of Lucknow - one of the first major Indian rebellions against the mighty East India Company and the British. The one in which more Victoria Crosses were awarded on any one day - more than any other military action. You can almost smell the gunpowder.
