Softcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: in wraps. First Edition. Vintage WW2 Softcover, Marked restricted on cover, August 1944, Air Surgeon, Army Air Force/Macy, 1944. 307 pages. Good, in wraps. Major shelf/edge wear, soiling to light olive green wraps with dark blue titles. No previous owner markings - all pages are intact with some very minor toning due to wartime paper. As the title states: this is a study of the Psychiatric Experiences of the Eighth Air Force: First Year of Combat (July 4, 1942-July 4, 1943). If you've seen the 1949 film 12 O'Clock High starring Gregory Peck and Hugh Marlowe, then you have just a taste of the hell that these pilots went through in accomplishing their missions. Reading this will sober anyone up to what men endure for God and Country.A reading and research copy only.LOC SSE-03.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 442 Squadron History; Capt. Grant MacDonald and Capt. Terry Strocel; published by the 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron, 1987. From the blurb "The present day 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron originated as 14 (Fighter) Squadron in January, 1942, and served for eight months in the Aleutians. In 1944 the squadron was re-formed in England as 442 (F) Squadron, part of 144 Wing, flying Spitfires and later Mustangs. Following the war, 442 was activated as an Auxiliary Fighter Squadron at Sea Island, B. C., and flew an assortment of aircraft types, including Vampires, Mustangs, Sabres and Harvards. It was later re-designated an Auxiliary Transport Squadron on Otters and Expeditors until disbanded in 1964. Meanwhile, 123 Rescue Flight and 121 Composite Flight had been formed at Sea Island to provide Search and Rescue and light transport support to Western Air Command. When Sea Island closed in 1964, 121 KU moved to Comox, where in 1968, it was renamed 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron. On October 4, 1980 the Squadron successfully rescued more than 500 people from the sinking luxury liner, MV Prinsendam, in the Gulf of Alaska. Facing strong winds and high seas, the Squadron pulled off what is considered to be the largest single marine rescue, without loss of life, in modern history. The book is very well illustrated with a few in colour. This 145-page volume is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket, now in a protective mylar wrap. There is a small, neat presentation inscription on the front foreleaf. This is a surprising scarce Canadian Aviation Squadron history.
