"The stories in this volume, written originally in nine different languages by 23 masters of the story-telling art, were culled from 14 national literatures. Some have never been published before in English. Each of them fulfills the fundamental require…ments of a story, namely, interest an dentertainment of the reader. Character sketches, drama and adventure, tradegy, satire and mystery may be found here side by side. These stories have two elements in common: a gentile author and a Jewish subject. Such names as Boccaccio, Carl Ewald, Anton Chekhov, Anatole Frane, Strindberg, Cargiale, Eliza Orzeszko, Stephen Vincent Benet, Sinclair Lewis and others represent the finest artists of the literatures to which they contributed. Each author differs in his approach to the subject of the Jew, and writes with a view to a social problem of his own day and surroundings. All of them are free from vulgar prejudices and place the discussion on a high moral and intellectual plane. In his stimulating preface to this volume, Carl Van Doren points this out in his remark, 'The best non-Jews have not been unjust or inhuman towards Jews.' Clearly the Jew has always and everywhere been an interesting subject. Doctor Joseph L. Baron selected these stories from a much larger collection of gentile tales about Jews, because these are the best examples from the point of view of tought and artistic presentation. At the same time, he indicates that the Jews have never lacked sympathetic understanding of the more fiar-minded among this neighbors. Here may be found tolerance and admiration for Jewish martyrdom, and an understanding of Jewish life and character. Each story in its own time and place sheds a bright light in a dark corner in human relationships. They combine here to serve our dark and unhappy times as 'Candle in the Night'." [Book weight = 650 grams] Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Published by Alfred A. Knopf, the book was edited by John Dorsey, who also wrote the Introduction. From the dust-jacket flap : "In essays celebrating the incomparable H. L. Mencken, on the centenary of his birth, eight distinguished writers and editors consider various aspects of the man and his work - telling of his life, his writings, his prejudices, his passions, and his profound influence on American letters in the first half of the Twentieth Century. --- The result is a book that offers much pleasure and new insights to Mencken's admirers, and that will serve, for anyone not familiar with him, as a fine introduction to one of the most colorful and memorable figures in modern Twentieth Century American letters."
