In good condition, some with partial fading, ghosting, soiling and staining. None of these Watkins California prints is signed (they could be on the verso, but it is not possible t…o examine as they are pasted-in on thick cardboard, 8 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches) but most of them can be seen on the website of the Carleton Watkins Organization and in different Archives (The Bancroft Library of the University of California, The California State Library, The Society of California Pionners and The Pat Hathaway Photo Collection), where they are directly attributed to Carleton Watkins (American, 1829-1916), one of the most highly acclaimed of early western photographers. 6 pages disbound from an album, including 7 additional unimportant photographs (European subjects not by Watkins), all pasted-in. These Watkins photographs can be divided in two groups: Monterey, California (Hotel Del Monte and Carmel Mission - Misión San Carlos Borromeo del Río Carmelo); and San Francisco (Palace Hotel, Cliff House and Cable Cars); Handwritten captions in ink for some of them. [1] "Hotel Del Monte, Monterey, Cal. Oct. 1882". [2] "The Cottage, Monterey", partially faded. [3] "Cypress Tress, Monterey", partially faded. [4] "Mission El Carmelo" near Monterey".
