Seller: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, U.S.A.
Fourteen mounted albumen & silver gelatin original photographs, sized from 1.5 x 2.2 in. mounted on 2.2 x 3.2 in. studio board up to 6 x 8 in. on 9 x 11.25 in. gray studio board, most w/ neat ink manuscript captions on versos, photographer's imprints on two embossed at lower blank, 2 others w/ photographer's imprints stamped on verso, varying colours of studio boards, some w/ serrated or scalloped edges (minor age toning, some minor wear), still an excellent group of images, all with bright strong contrast. These scarce and well-executed original albumen and silver gelatin photographs document moments of service by Company D, 8th California Volunteer Infantry mustered originally at Fruitvale, CA with 35 officers, and 1,250 enlisted men, and by Sept. 10 through Dec. 22, the individual companies were distributed at Fort Vancouver Barracks, Washington, Alcatraz island, Benicia Barracks, angel island, and the San Francisco Presidio. Two of the photographs capture the 8th California Volunteers in parade ground formation wearing Spanish-American War expeditionary uniforms, who at the time were scheduled for service in the Philippines. The photos include historic Officer's Row, and other Barracks surrounding buildings. Also included are two images of the Vancouver Barracks decorated dining hall and "Kitchen Detail" for Christmas dinner, Dec. 25, 1898, depicting well-appointed tables, giant wreath on wall in shape of "D;" the exterior of Carrington's Post Commander's Quarters at the Vancouver Barracks while he was in command; and a small albumen photo showing the "Mustering out of Co. "A" Independent Battalion, Washington Volunteers Oct., 1898. One unidentified Company "D" Sergeant's photo bears the Vancouver, WA photographer's imprint of Hofsteater, a studio originally founded by O.M. Hofsteater in Vancouver around 1885, and would continue operating until about 1900, as well as ran a "Floating Gallery" in Vancouver on the Columbia River. Identified soldiers in small albumen portrait photographs include Private James A. Biggam, Charles Burckhart, J.J. Davis, musician with Company D, and W.A. Ferry, cook in the Vancouver Barracks, along with Chief Cook William D. Rogge, of Company D, 8th California Volunteer Infantry. Carrington (1855-1940) served frontier duty at Fort Randall, Dakota Territory in 1878, followed by service in Texas and scouting in Arizona, and later served as Captain, and Instructor for the California First Infantry, and was appointed Lieut. Col. of the 8th California in 1898, eventually serving in Cuba, Fort Leavenworth, and then in the Philippines. He commanded scouts until 1904 when he was removed from command, handed over to the civilian authorities, and was employed there until 1908. K.U. Hyland (fl. 1890-1901) operated a photo studio first on Morrison, and then from 1896-1901 at Washington, Corner of 7th, although the photographic imprints are quite scarce, and directories switched between C.U. and K.U. for initials. H.W. Wesco, photographer for the two striking images of the 8th California on parade appears to have been quite circumspect, and does not appear in either street directories, or census records, only appearing in trademark filings for the "Northwest Real Estate & Investment Co." in 1888 and again in 1891.
