Softcover. 12mo., 206 pp. Paperback original. Subject of the 2024 HBO documentary. Provides "the answer to the narcotic problem that compels human beings to sink to the lowest levels in society. and shows how Synanon corrected these evils by recognizing that dope addiction is an illness rather than a crime." Synanon was established in 1958 as an innovative drug rehab center in Santa Monica, CA and evolved into an experimental commune and "religion" that attracted thousands of nonaddict members and was strongly committed to social justice and progressive education. Over 25,000 people were members of Synanon at various times, including jazz musicians Charlie Haden and Stan Kenton; supporters of the group included Senator Thomas Dodd, comedian Steve Allen, and psychologist Abraham Maslow. In its later years, however, the group became involved in highly publicized violent actions--making the group's name synonymous with paranoid cults. An uncommon title. Very Good with uniform age-toning in black and yellow illustrated wraps.
