Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Baba Yaga, A Popular Russian Tale, retold by Rose Celli, illustrated by Nathalie Parain, planned by Pere Castor, pub. Artists and Writers Guild Inc., Poughkeepsie, NY, 1935. 1st US ed. [1st original French edition was 1932]. 16 pages, illustrated in colour lithographs. Large format 330 mm x 280 mm. Card covers with touches of wear to edges, some small chips and paper abrasions/creasing. Internally VG with mild taning to page margins, no inscriptions. A one page introduction informs the reader that 'Pere Castor' is the name by which Paul Faucher wants to be known and mentions his interest in education. Faucher introduced the Pere Castor series of children's books with the French publisher Flammarion in 1931 breaking from the tradition of expensive illustrated gift books for children and democratising books for the younger reader. Parain [Natalia Tchelpanova 1897-1958] was among the first illustrators of the series and several Eastern European artists were also employed bringing a fresh modernist vision to children's illustration.
Condition: Very good. Authorized American edition of this early large format Père Castor book, featuring striking and stylized Art Deco color lithographs by Parain. Russian émigré artist Parain would become a major player in the Père Castor series that created clever children's books with a Modernist point of view, not only in illustrating a number of the books but in introducing the series editor to other Russian émigré artists working with avant-garde Constructivist, Dadaist, and Minimalist art philosophies. Parain illustrated the first two Père Castor books in 1831; the French edition of this book, BABA YAGA, was one of the earliest titles, from 1932. It was artists like Nathalie Parain, Alexandra Exter, Hélène Guertik, Feodor Rojankowsky, and Georges Cherkessof that gave the Père Castor books their greatest distinction and gained them long-lasting fame. 12.75'' x 11''. Original side-stapled color pictorial flexible card wrappers. Illustrated by Parain in color throughout. 16 pages. Small piece of corner nipped and slight edge wear.
