Bookplate of Charles Atwood Kofoid, noted American zoologist at front paste down. "The De medicina is the oldest medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about AD 30, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine. Quintus Serenius Sammonicus (d. 211) was physician to the Emperor Severus and was put to death by Caracalla. Allbutt called him 'a man of some attainments'.
