Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Contemporary sheep skin covers, with inked title on spine. Older paper library label near foot of spine. Inked name and date (1770) on first blank page. Covers are very slightly soiled. Light scattered foxing. A very lovely copy of the first edition of this classic work.

Early quarter calf over marbled boards, Good, heavy wear, boards nearly detached, edges showing, an early signature at title page obscured. Bookplate of Charles Atwood Kofoid, noted American zoologist at front paste down. "The De medicina is the oldest medical document after the Hippocratic writings. Written about AD 30, it remains the greatest medical treatise from ancient Rome, and the first Western history of medicine. Garrison and Morton, 20, Blake, NLM, pp. 82, 415; Wellcome, II, p.319, See also Waller, 1855. Quintus Serenius Sammonicus (d. 211) was physician to the Emperor Severus and was put to death by Caracalla. Allbutt called him 'a man of some attainments'.
