Segnacoli in tessuto. Da p. 415 del secondo volume lieve (e inizialmente piccolo ma ampliantesi) alone bruno a metà pagina…inizialmente ininfluente e fastidioso solo da p. 425 fino all' ultima pagina (di imprimatur) che presenta anche una piccola lacuna (1.5 cm) integrata con un inserto cartaceo al verso. Peraltro fresco esemplare ad ampi margini. Edizione originale, rara, di questa liberissima traduzione in endecasillabi sciolti che però spesso ricorre alla parafrasi e con dichiarata licenza poetica introduce anche brani estranei al dettato omerico come esplica nelle note di metodo dell' introduzione. Seppur nella non perfetta aderenza all' originale rappresenta un testimonianza fondativa del neoclassicismo italiano insieme agli altri volgarizzamenti del periodo ad opera di Cesarotti, Monti, Verri et alii. In In calce ad ogni libro note più o meno estese. Infine indice delle cose notabili. Il canonico piemontese Giacinto Cerutti fu singolare figura di letterato avventuriero sodale del Casanova. Negli anni '80 del Settecento, ormai bandito dal Piemonte, riuscì a ottenere un posto di professore presso l'Accademia navale di Cartagena ove approntò il presente volgarizzamento che lo fece diventare membro dell'Accademia di Berlino e sembrò riaccordargli il plauso dei Savoja: tuttavia la dedica a Vittorio Amedeo II, proposta per il secondo volume (essente il primo dedicato a stampa all' Infante di Spagna Gabrile Antonio) fu invece rigettata dal sovrano e l'opera ebbe una fredda accoglienza negli ambienti intellettuali italiani. Controversi i giudizi sincronici sul suo lavoro traduttivo: per alcuni egli aveva scarsa comoscenza della lingua greca, per altri in alcuni casi usò traduzioni già presenti e infine si in alcuni casi diede adito a «lascivie drammatiche».
