This is a practical guide to Japan, a travel aid offering insights into the cultural etiquette and history of Japan for potential Western tourists. Written for a late 19th Century audience, it contains many insights that remain relevant to this day. For example, it explains the idiosyncrasies of Japanese currency, discusses and compares various means of transportation available at the time, and offers detailed advice to Western travelers, such as the importance of presenting a 'chadai' or tea money in lieu of a tip. It also provides a snapshot of a place in time, offering a glimpse into Japanese customs and daily life in the Meiji period as well as the different styles of hotels and restaurants catering to both Japanese and Western travelers. The author also gives useful tips on communicating with the locals, including Japanese vocabulary and grammar lessons and even offers sentence examples, their phonetic pronunciations, and literal English translations. A particularly helpful aid for visitors, as not much English was spoken in Japan at that time. This book is written in a lively tone, with the author sharing snippets of Japanese history, religious beliefs, and insights on local customs and habits.
