François-Michel Le Tellier(1641-1691), marquis de Louvois est l'un des hommes d'État les plus importants du règne de Louis XIV. D'abord secrétaire d'État à la Guerre puis Surintendant des Bâtiments du roi en 1677, son ascension professionnelle est remarquable. Dans Le siècle de Louis XIV, Voltaire écrit à propos de Louvois : "Il fut plus estimé qu'aimé du roi, de la cour et du public [.].". Succédant à Colbert, sa nomination à la tête de la surintendance des Bâtiments du Roi le 6 septembre 1683 donne à Louvois l'occasion de satisfaire son goût pour les bâtiments et les jardins. Il lance de grands chantiers emblématiques : le Grand Commun, l'agrandissement des Petites et Grandes Ecuries, les ailes du Nord et du Midi, la Grande Galerie, l'Appartement du Roi, le cabinet des Médailles, l'Orangerie et le Trianon de Marbre. Unique édition de cette biographie. Son attribution demeure incertaine : Barbier propose Bolé de Chamlay ou Saint-Pouange, mais Camille Rousset, dans son Histoire de Louvois, réfute ces deux attributions.
