First Edition. Signed by the author, A.J. Marriot, on the title page. A detailed record and extensively illustrated view of the stage appearances of Charlie Chaplin, before his entry into films with Chaplin appearing in The Eight Lancashire Lads; Sherlock Holmes; Casey's Circus; Repairs; Fred Karno Company UK and US. 246 page, large format, paperbound. Brand new. There are over 400 books covering the films of Chaplin, but CHAPLIN - Stage by Stage is the only one which exclusively covers Chaplin's stagework, before going into films. It contains over 550 confirmed appearances of Chaplin on stage, between 1899 and November 1913, in England, Scotland, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey, Northern Ireland, Southern Ireland, Paris, Canada and the United States of America - the vast majority of which were previously unknown. If you believe that everything that could be written about Charlie Chaplin has been written - then prepare to be shocked! Within these pages are to be found accounts of ALL the dates and venues for Chaplin's thousands of stage appearances before he went into films. These begin early in 1899 and continue until the end of 1913, almost without a break. To compile such a list, totalling some estimated four-thousand dates, was a mammoth task but, some ninety-plus years after they were made, they are now finally on record, along with the corresponding venue and play, sketch, or act in which Chaplin was appearing. You will find the detail truly staggering. The book will also provide many unknown facts about the lives of two other show business legends, namely Fred Karno and Stan Laurel, whilst destroying many myths and mistakes, lies and legends, in the accounts written by Chaplin himself.

First Edition, First Printing. From the library of the queen of Hollywood gossip columnists, Louella Parsons, with her bookplate. The bookplate states Ô EX LIBRIS - LOUELLA PARSONS MARTIN.Ó The border depicts two radio microphones which indicates ParsonÕs Hollywood radio broadcasts. At the top of the bookplate are two crossed quill pens with an inkwell to represent her writing. The central image is a stack of eight books stacked on a table with ParsonsÕs pet pug dog trying to climb up on the table. Parsons was married to Dr. Harry W. Martin, Hollywood studio physician at 20th Century-Fox. Affectionately, called Docky by Parsons. The play Shadow and Substance, was a big hit on Broadway, and surprisingly Charles Chaplin was so taken it, that he purchased the motion picture rights and intended to film it, with Chaplin as director. It was during the pre-production period of Shadow and Substance that Chaplin signed aspiring actress Joan Barry to play the lead. Preparation began, costumes prepared and sets in design. During this period, Chaplin had a brief fling with Barry but broke off the affair as he discovered she was emotionally unstable and mentally ill. The production halted, and Barry tried to break into ChaplinÕs home. She later became pregnant and had a baby girl. She then had Chaplin prosecuted claiming he was the father. Rival gossip columnist, right wing, Hedda Hopper viciously and directly supported Barry. Louella Parsons was a friend of ChaplinÕs and supported him throughout the trial. Chaplin was acquitted, and blood tests proved he could not be the father, but the vindictive judge made Chaplin financially support the child. The book is in near fine condition in original cloth in a used, and chipped later state dust jacket.

Hardcover. First Edition. A very early, if not first, printing with no date on the title page and the code "B-W" on the copyright page indicating publication in February 1922. Chaplin's account of what Europe did to the world's most popular movie actor, illustrated with photographs. This copy bears a scarce SIGNED INSCRIPTION by the author on the recto of the frontispiece photograph: "To my dear old pal/Billy. Hoping you will/have a little fun/browsing through this/Charlie Chaplin/Feb. 24th 1922." Books signed by Chaplin, especially of such an early date when he was at the height of his popularity, are quite scarce. We have handled only one other signed copy of this book in over twenty years and it was inscribed in June, 1922. This copy likely INSCRIBED to the pioneering Western star Broncho Billy Anderson, a close friend of Chaplin's. The pictorial boards for this book are almost always quite worn and the dust jacket hardly ever present. This copy is quite decent with minor rubbing to the front cover with old staining to the rear cover. The spine and the front free endpaper have been expertly replaced and look exactly like the original. Very Good, lacking the uncommon dustwrapper.
