Pott 16mo. xiv, 180 pp; engraved frontispiece and titlepage. Full calf with later spine, gilt lettering on black label, slightly rubbed. Printed by Corrall of Charing Cross. An attractive little book divided into two sections; the first gives an account of Mrs Chapone's life via ten letters to her niece in which she proffers advice on such issues as the First Principles of Religion; the Regulations of the Affections; the Government of the Temper; and on Reading History. Part two is made up of a series of letters from Dr Gregory, of Edinburgh, wherein he offers counsel on religion, conduct and behaviour, amusements, marriage, and friendships. He wrote the letters "while in a declining state of health" and states they were never intended for the Public: "Never allow any person, under the pretended sanction of friendship, to be so familiar as to lose a proper respect for you.". Book.
