Nun folgen die »Bilder aus meinem Leben" von der gleichen Autorin eine Art Selbstbiographie. Dieses Buch ist im Jahre 1914 zum ersten Mal erschienen. Den Hauptteil des Bandes nimmt die Schilderung der Kindheit und Jugend der Autorin ein. Was war das für ein armseliges, von Furcht überschattetes Kinderleben, in dem es viel Strenge und manche Schläge gab ? und so wenig Liebe, nach der das Kind zeit seines Lebens hungerte! Und doch: Was gab es da für Wunder zu sehen und zu erkennen, für Pflanzen und Tiere zu sammeln, welche Fülle von Namen gab es zu lernen, welche Wege zu gehen! Hier tat sich dem Kind ein Reichtum auf, der den meisten Menschen damals verschlossen bleiben mußte. Die häufige Trennung von der Mutter war und blieb für das Mädchen Charitas ein schreckliches Ereignis. Während die Mutter, ständig von Geldsorgen geplagt, ihre Forschungsreisen unternahm, mußte die Tochter, zu- meist bei fremden Menschen untergebracht, Mangel leiden und die Einsamkeit eines Kindes aushalten, in dessen Familie es ?nicht mit rechten Dingen" zuging. Mit Temperament und innerer Freiheit erstattet die Autorin hier Bericht von einem Leben, dessen Hintergrund die konsequente, hochzuachtende Forschertätigkeit der Amalie Dietrich bildet. Diese gab trotz aller Mühseligkeit und finanziellen Schwierigkeiten ihr Vorhaben nicht auf. Daß dieses Mädchen seine schwere Kindheit ohne Schaden überstanden hat, ist auch seiner tiefen Frömmigkeit zuzuschreiben, die ihm in schlimmsten Zeiten eine Hilfe wurde. Ein lebendiges, farbiges Zeitbild erschließt sich dem Leser, wenn er Charitas' Lebensweg folgt.
