Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the author's research into increasing the efficiency of incandescent lighting via two methods: operating the carbon filament in a carbon-containing gas, and investigating the use of rare earth oxides in Nernst filaments. Starting with an overview of the established theories on incandescent lighting, the author outlines the inefficiencies of the carbon filament lamp, which had a theoretical efficiency far surpassing its actual efficiency due to factors such as "vaporization." The first research path explored the effect of operating the carbon filament in a carbon-containing gas. Initial experiments with carbon tetrabromide and cyanogen showed promise, and led to the investigation of pure cyanogen gas. Using cyanogen, the author was able to operate a lamp at more than twice its rated voltage for fifteen minutes and twenty minutes, respectively, before the lamps burned out. The second research path investigated the use of rare earth oxides in Nernst filaments, which had shown much promise due to their high incandescent light output and high conductivity, but had been difficult to operate due to their high starting temperatures. The author attempted to substitute thoria for zirconia in the Nernst filament in order to lower the starting temperature, while maintaining the filament's high efficiency. Despite several batches of filaments being made with varying percentages of thoria and yttria, none could be successfully started. The reasons for this failure are discussed, along with possible solutions for future attempts. Overall, this book provides valuable insights into the research and development of incandescent lighting in the early 20th century, and offers a glimpse into the challenges and possibilities of the field at that time. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 2004). 2004 1st edition. 8vo (138 x 22mm). Ppvi,314. Bibliography, not illustrated. Black boards, spine titled in silver-gilt. Browning to edges. Good-plus in shelf-rubbed dust-wrapper. "Seventy five percent of the world's fish stocks are either fully exploited or overfished. If nothing is done to stop the squandering of fish stocks the life of the oceans will face collapse and millions of people could starve. Trawling on an industrial scale in the North Sea smashes everything it does not catch, taking 16lbs of marine animals to produce just 1lb of sole. Because of the shortage of traditional kinds of fish the market has moved on, competing, sometimes illegally, with local fishermen in the waters off Africa and in the Indian Ocean and plundering the high seas and the ocean depths all the way to Antarctica. [This book] also looks at the role of conservationists, governments and multi-national companies and considers some models for recovery, for example how Icelandic cod, Alaskan halibut and North Sea herring were rescued from destruction, the possibilities of fish farming and the potential of locally managed offshore marine reserves." Occasionally sensationalist but an interesting and well-researched book on the problems of overfishing. .

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In this indispensable follow up to his acclaimed The End of the Line: How Overfishing is Changing the World, Charles Clover chronicles how determined individuals are proving that the crisis in our oceans can be reversed, with benefits for both local communities and entire ecosystems. Rewilding the Sea celebrates what happens when we step aside and let nature repair the damage: whether it is the overfishing of bluefin tuna across the Atlantic, the destruction of coral gardens by dredgers in Lyme Bay or the restoration of oysters on the East Coast of America. The latest scientific research shows that trawling and dredging create more CO2 than the aviation industry and damage vast areas of our continental shelves, stopping them soaking up carbon. We need to fish in different ways, where we fish at all. We can store carbon and have more fish by stepping aside more often and trusting nature. Essential and revelatory, Rewilding the Sea propels us to rethink our relationship with nature and reveals that saving our oceans is easier than we think.
