Hardback. Condition: Fine. Kathryn Jacobi (illustrator). Dickens, Charles. The Bride's Chamber. Edited with an introduction and notes by Harry Stone. Illustrated by Kathryn Jacobi. (Santa Monica, Calif.): Waxwing Editions, 1996. First separate edition. Folio, pp. [i-ii] [i-vi] vii [viii] 1-154 [155-156]. Original dark blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. One of 375 copies. Signed by the editor and the illustrator. Fine, as issued, without jacket or slipcase. (Extra postage for this item.) #379. $25. This is a ghost story that Dickens wrote and published in 1857 in his weekly magazine, Household Words, as part of the travel series he worked on with Wilkie Collins, The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices. Like everything else in that magazine, The Lazy Tour appeared without a by-line. It was first reprinted in a rare 1875 piracy, The Dickens-Collins Christmas Stories, which gave a joint attribution of authorship to all of its contents. The blanket joint attribution was repeated in its next reprint, in 1890, by Chapman and Hall. It was not until fairly recently that scholarship determined "The Bride's Chamber" to be the work solely of Dickens. The story was included in The Supernatural Short Stories of Charles Dickens (London: Calder, 1978, edited by Michael Haye). But Prof. Stone identified this story as the work of Dickens, alone, at least as early as 1969 in an essay, "The Genesis of a Novel: Great Expectations", which he contributed for Charles Dickens 1812-1870, A Centenary Volume, edited by E. W. F. Tomlin (London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, [1969]). In the course of identifying some of the raw materials of theme and imagery which went into the making of Great Expectations, Prof. Stone examines The Lazy Tour and that section of it to which he gives the title, "The Bride's Chamber," and shows how it reflects crucial events taking place in Dickens's life at the time, events and themes that also found later expression in Great Expectations. Stone refers to "The Bride's Chamber" as "the wild ghost story that Dickens wrote for The Lazy Tour." (p. 125) and as "his desolate little ghost story" (p. 127). Prof. Stone went on to write two books that explore the role of the supernatural and the horrific in the author's life and work, Dickens and the Invisible World (1979) and The Night Side of Dickens: Cannibalism, Passion, Necessity (1994). This is a fine ghost story in a meticulously researched and sumptuously presented edition.
