Andersson was an amateur naturalist and in this narrative describes in detail the geological and mineral features of these scarcely visited lands, together with the religions, manners and customs of the local tribes. Initially travelling with Galton who returned early to London, Andersson went on to reach Lake Ngami before arriving back in London in 1855. The book contains many lithographs and wood engravings which richly illustrate the many exciting tales, including battling with a lion and a cautionary story in which a crocodile gets his European prey! Written with a fine sense of humour, his descriptions range from the smoking habits of the natives to the riskier side of hunting black Rhinoceros. His subsequent expedition through Namibia is covered in his second book; The Okavango River.

Erstausgabe.
