PAPERBACK, spine reglued at crease mark, otherwise good copy. nicely INSCRIBED on half-title page to a recipient veteran of a WWII bomb group, best wishes and SIGNED Charles McBride, dated 1993. MCBRIDE, CHARLES C. Mission failure and survival. Edited by Ann Warren. Manhattan, Kansas: Sunflower University Press, 1989, 191pp., . Charles C. McBride served in the Army Air Forces of World War II as a bombardier. Unable to reach the English coast due to lack of fuel, he and his crew bailed out of their B-24 bomber over France on 1 April 1944. Only he and two others managed to evade capture and lived five months with French Resistance until rescued by Allied armies. Faulty navigation had caused the entire force of bombers to remain over Germany too long, which resulted in two bomber groups straying over Switzerland and bombing the town of Schaffhausen in error. 9780897451253 ISBN 0897451252.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Introduction to the American haiku The haiku is a minimalist poetic style developed in Japan centuries ago. The style has been typified by the use of 17 on, which are phonetic sounds, not syllables, and a juxtaposition of two images or concepts with a kireji (cutting word) delineating the contrast/comparison. Ever since English-speaking poets began to write haiku, the form has evolved, starting with the erroneous use of 17 syllables instead of on and the 3-line format. (Japanese haiku poets write in one continuous line.) Even contemporary Japanese poets do not adhere to the 17 on tradition. What is paramount is depicting the juxtaposition with economy of words. Jack Kerouac was fascinated by this art form and had this to say: "The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different I don't think American Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry about syllables because American speech is something again.bursting to pop." Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella." The following haiku are not nature scenes; however, they do reflect the natural world. Due to our sound bite news culture and short attention span society, I wanted to direct the readers' attention to contemporary issues and observations with haiku's quick draw accuracy. Thank you for reading. Charles Lee McBride Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

A very nice cop of one of the better issues of this magazine.
