Cet ouvrage, comme l'indique un Avis imprimé au verso du faux-titre, était destiné au concours du prix, mais il s'en est trouvé exclus, parce qu'on a prorogé de trois mois le terme annoncé, et que l'auteur n'a été instruit de ce délai, par les papiers publics, que vingt jours après l'époque qui avait été d'abord fixée. L'ouvrage étant imprimé, et déjà annoncé dans la Bibliothèque Britannique, l'anonyme qui est une condition de rigueur, ne pouvait plus être gardé. Charle Pictet de Rochemont (1755-1824), l'auteur de ce traité, fut à la fois un homme d'état suisse et un agronome pragmatique. C'est à la suite d'un voyage en Angleterre effectué en 1787 que Pictet s'intéresse à l'agriculture. Il introduit la culture du maïs près de Genève et se lance dans l'élevage des moutons Mérinos. C'est aussi lui qui fonde en 1796 la Bibliothèque Britannique, périodique littéraire et scientifique qui diffusera les idées scientifiques durant de nombreuses années. La révolution et l'Empire avaient éloigné Pictet de la scène politique genevoise qu'il retrouve après la chute de Napoléon. Il devient un diplomate incontournable et signe le traité de reconnaissance de neutralité permanente de la Suisse (1815). Il meurt à 69 ans à Genève, auréolé de ses victoires diplomatiques. Ce volume se trouvait à Paris chez Fuchs, Pougens et Emery. Ce livre répond à la question cruciale, et plus que jamais d'actualité encore aujourd'hui en ce début de XXIe siècle : "Quelle est la meilleure manière d'alterner les récoltes, à l'usage du plus grand nombre des cultivateurs ; à l'effet de diminuer, autant qu'il est possible, les jachères, suivant la différente nature des terres."
