Condition: Very good plus to near fine. First edition of this famous book of fairy tales by Wilde, magnificently illustrated with designs by Charles Ricketts and plates by Ricketts's partner Charles Shannon. An important children's book by a three great artists of the Aesthetic movement in England. Ricketts and Shannon were a couple who also worked together at their Vale Press. Printed in an edition of 1000 copies on high quality paper; due to damage of the printing plates, the plates in all copies of this book appear faded (see Muir). The stories include "The Young King," "The Birthday of the Infanta," "The Fisherman and His Soul," and "The Star Child." The text block evidences none of the foxing that typically afflicts this title: a beautiful copy. Quarto. 8.5'' x 7''. Quarter green cloth, and decorative cloth boards. Cover design, title page, pictorial endpapers, and textual ornaments by Ricketts; 4 plates illustrated by Shannon. 158 pages. Housed in cloth-backed marbled paper custom box. Texts by the editors, artists and John Gray, Michael Field, T. Sturge Moore, Emile Verhaeren, Laurence Housman and others. Period bindings of quarter brown morocco with green cloth sides, top edges gilt. The Dial, despite its short printruns and limited readership, occupies an important position in the 1890's revival of typography and wood engraving. It provided Shannon and Ricketts with the impetus to found the Vale Press in 1896.On each front pastedown is the pictorial bookplate of Edmund Bulkley a noted American collector of private press titles from this period. The final volume is damp-affected with staining and damage to the top sections of the covers and the top margins of the pages. It is also defective at the spine. The other volumes have rubbing to the spines. Sporadic foxing, heavy in places. Notwithstanding the aforementioned faults, a scarce set.
