Vintage flyer for an experimental music performance held at The Living Theatre on November 7, 1960. Flyer advertises performances by composers Stephen Addiss, Peter Hartman, Ezra Sims, William Sydeman, and Charles Wuorinen. Founded in 1947, The Living Theatre laid the foundation for a robust underground art scene in the New York City. After more than a decade of successful original radical stage productions and adaptations of works by playwrights such as Bertold Brecht and Gertrude Stein, founders Judith Malina and Julian Beck used their space and resources for the nourishment of the arts more broadly, offering the theatre for literary benefits, film screenings, and musical performances, such as the ones advertised here. 14 x 8.5 inches. Very Good plus, with faint age toning on the left and right edges, and a few nicks at the corners.

Paperback. Folio (15" X 20"). Stiff brown manila wrappers with brown cloth tape spine and matching outer edges. 190pp. Very good. Quite minor edgewear to outer wrappers (only); mild age toning to text block. Tight and attractive and exceptionally unusual copy of this orchestral piece, being the dedicatee's personal copy. This "edition" is a facsimile of Wuorinen's complete handwritten score, likely produced in only a handful of copies. The piece was commissioned by James Dixon, conductor of the University of Iowa Orchestra, who conducted the premiere performance with Wuorinen himself as soloist in May 1966. The title page bears a printed "to James Dixon" at the top, and below his printed name, Wuorinen boldly inscribes it in pencil "For James, with deepest appreciation / and gratitude. / Charles." Below this, Dixon adds in pencil, "Premiere Iowa City / May 1966 / Recorded Royal Philharmonic / London / Sept 9, 1968." Dixon's extensive pencilled notes, additions, corrections and so on appear throughout the entire score -- an intriguing insight into the conductor's creative process, and almost certainly accomplished with input from the composer himself. CHARLES WUORINEN (1938-2020) was one of America's most prolific and versatile composers, the youngest ever to be awarded for Pulitzer Prize for Music (for "Time's Encomium," 1970). JAMES DIXON (1929-2007) was a well-known Iowa orchestra conductor and music educator. A choice copy: The dedicatee's personal copy of a working score, used in the premiere performance and inscribed by its Pulitzer Prize-winning composer.

Wuorinen is a highly regarded American composer, whose more than 260 compositions includes works for orchestra, opera, and chamber music, as well as solo instrumental and vocal works. In recent years he's worked on large-scale projects for the stage, including collaborations with Annie Proulx and Salman Rushdie. Inscribed by the author, to poet and publisher Coburn Britton: "For Coby, even though it's a textbook, some of the ways things are expected would be different, but for you. Love, Chuck." Scarce.
