Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original publisher's green cloth binding. 9 1/4" x 11 1/2." 182 pages, complete. Index in back. Fifteen color plates, complete. Ninety-five black and white plates, complete. Plates from the Macpherson collection. Gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Front cover scuffed at one time, but professionally re-colored. Some foxing on text but not on the plates. A comprehensive book on early ship prints and how they evolved over time. Chatterson examines different printing processes and art developments used to make ship prints. He also analyzes several examples to provide an in-depth look at the prints and their historical context. Chapter include the following: "The First Ship Prints," "Shipping and Engraving," "Art and Adventure," "Prints and the Rise of Sea-Power," "Mezzotint and Aquatint," "Early Nineteenth-century Ship Prints, "Merchant Ship Prints," and "Prints of Fore-and-aft Vessels.".
