"This edition is printed in 350 numbered copies from number 101 to 450 on Navar Paper." This copy is stamped, "Copy No. [blank]," indicating that it probably comes from the first one hundred copies that were not numbered. In Yiddish. Title translates as, "Issachar Ber Rybak: His Life and Creativity." Published by the Committee for the Commemoration of the Memory of Issachar Ber Ribak A retrospective catalog featuring 32 reproductions of his works from the Wildenstein exhibition, released shortly after the untimely death of Issachar Ryback, and dedicated to the life and work of the artist. Born in 1897, Ryback emerged as a central figure within the Russian Jewish modernist movement.Born in Elisavetgrad, he studied at the Kyiv Art College and the studio of A. Murashko from 1911 to 1916. There, he worked alongside other notable artists like Nisson Shifrin, Baruch [Boris] Aronson, Alexander Tyshler, and Mark Epstein. Ryback's early work focused on documenting Jewish heritage, including painting wooden synagogues, carved tombstones, and objects from Jewish folk culture. His association with Jewish traditions remained central to his art throughout his life. In the late teens, Ryback studied cubo-futurism at the studios of Alexandra Exter and Alexander Bogomazov. By 1918-1919, he was teaching at the Jewish Cultural League in Kyiv. He also worked with its Kaunas branch a few years later. In 1921, Ryback moved to Berlin, where he joined the expressionist group 'Novembergruppe' and exhibited with the Berlin Secession. There, he worked alongside artists like Natan Altman and Joseph Chaikov, collaborating with Jewish writers. He designed children's books in Yiddish for Jewish publishers, using a neo-primitivist style inspired by Jewish folk art. In 1926 he moved to Paris, but died there just one day before the opening of his first major retrospective in 1935. Curated by Daniel Leopold Wildenstein, the renowned art dealer, collector, and scholar, this exhibition was to have marked the artist's long-awaited moment of recognition on the international stage. Instead, Ryback passed away at the height of his artistic promise as a leader in the cultural resurgence of Jewish art. This paperbound version includes the dramatic cover art lacking on the simple cloth-bound edition. OCLC: 28076612 Period bookplate.
