Samuel Claggett Chew (1837-1915) was born into a prominent family in Baltimore and received his A.M. from Princeton in 1856, and his M.D. from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1858. [He is apparently the father or kin of Samuel Claggett Chew (1888-1960) who was a well-known scholar of literature at Bryn Mawr University.] Chew was the Chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (now known as Pharmacology) at Maryland for 21 years before being transferred by the Dean to the Chair of the Principles and Practice of Medicine in 1886. In addition to teaching as faculty at the Medical School, he served as president of the Board of Trustees of Peabody Institute from 1895 until his death. This volume, published for private distribution by the Deutsch Company, includes a number of Dr. Chew's speeches on a variety of subjects, including Medicine in the Nineteenth Century, The Frick Libarey of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculiity of Maryland, Miracles, ad The Maryland "Act of Religion" and Sir Thomas More. An unusual and interesting find for scholars of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins. Very good in blue cloth covered boards wiht gilt title to front board and to spine. Minor fading to spine and board edges. Wear to spine ends and minor bumping to corners. A few small light spots of soiling to boards. Crack to binding though it remains tight. Text is clean and bright. 137 pages. 8vo. Maryland. MD/031215.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book takes a revealing look at the significant advancements in medicine made during the 19th century. It begins by highlighting the success of Jenner's work on the smallpox vaccine and its monumental impact on public health. The author continues by exploring the foundational work of Laennec in auscultatory diagnosis, which revolutionized the understanding and treatment of thoracic diseases, and Bright's pivotal contributions to the understanding of kidney disease and dropsy. The text then moves on to discuss the remarkable achievements of the mid-century regarding anesthesia and antiseptic surgery, crediting these advances with the dramatic rise in successful surgical outcomes. The book recognizes the contributions of Pasteur and others in the field of bacteriology, which led to the identification and understanding of disease-causing microorganisms and the development of vaccines and treatments. Ultimately, the book illuminates the profound influence these discoveries had on the practice of medicine and the immeasurable improvement in human health and longevity they have brought about. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the central themes present in the dramatic works of Lord Byron, and explores how they reflect his life and beliefs. The author traces how Byron's poetry, politics and personal life were inextricably linked and how his plays were a powerful expression of his radical and romantic vision. The study explores Byron's plays through the prism of their historical and social context, discussing how they reflect the intellectual and artistic currents of the Romantic period. The author argues that Byron's plays were an innovative and unconventional response to the dramatic conventions of the time and ultimately contributed to the development of English romantic drama.
