Seller: Ebeth & Abayjay Books, Lima, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. The Romance of the Western Chamber(A Chinese Play Written in the Thirteenth Century) by Hsi Hsiang Chi, Translated by S. I. Hsiung, and With a Preface by Gordon Bottomley, was published by Liveright Publishing Corporation, New York, in 1936. This 5" X 7 3/8", 281-page, 77-year-old offering is an ex-library copy in G+ condition. Still physically firm and sound for its 77 years, there is some modest yellowing of pages of text as well as some staining from original glue of endpapers front and back. Library markings are, surprisingly, scarce. But for a Dewey decimal assignation near the bottom of the book's spine, the only other mentionable is an approximately 2 1/2" X 5 3/4" front inside flap from this volume's AWOL dust jacket, attached/centered on the front loose end page. From said flap, "A remarkably fine example of the traditional Chinese drama as well as beautiful and artistic literature, 'The Western Chamber' is adapted into English by an accomplished scholar. In China it is regarded as THE play--an exquisite love story--and has run literally into thousands of editions. .The characters are vividly and firmly drawn, particularly Ying-Ying's inimitable maid, who is one of the most delightful creatures one has met in fiction. It is a beautiful story, enchantingly told." The theme of this play is based upon a short story written by one Yuan Cheng, a poet from the eighth century, translator S.I. Hsiung relates in his/her Preface, and the story was generally believed by most scholars to be a good deal auto-biographical in origin. It concerns a young man, Chang, in his early twenties, and the incredibly beautiful, enigmatic, 17-year-old Ying-Ying. Chang has occasion to actually save the lives of Ying-Ying, her mother, and her brother by being "in good " with a particularly vindictive, brutal military ruler who would have otherwise done away with Ying-Ying's family. When her mother orders her to present herself to Chang and offer her thanks and gratitude, he is overwhelmed immediately--he will never be the same. You soon learn that the visually stunning Ying-Ying also possesses a very, very sharp tongue, and the battle of the sexes is soon underway--but not in the way you might think. This is one of the strangest, most bewildering love affairs you will ever be witness to--I'll leave it to you to analyze and dissect same. SPECIAL NOTE: There are no less than 10 black and white Line Drawings, each of which spans two adjoining pages, all done in a delicate, Oriental style/manner, throughout the book--each captioned with appropriate/ applicable lines from text. Also included are Contents Pages, (List of) Illustrations, and an EXTREMELY HELPFUL Appendix("The Story of Ts'ui Ying-Ying" by Yuan Cheng). This is, indeed, a most unusual, quite captivating story and book. Thanks!!
