Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Issue number 1 (1988) of Alpinism, the short-lived Canadian mountaineering magazine that covered worldwide difficult mountaineering, ice-climbing, and rock climbing. It ran for only one issue, a follow-up publication of Polar Circus, intended as a continuation of that high quality mountaineering magazine. Chic Scott was the progenitor/founder of this publication. He told me that he wanted to continue the spirit of Polar Circus, but logistics and commitment to publishing a quality magazine turned out to be too stretching for his limited time since he was (and continues to be) involved with writing and publishing many other mountaineering/ski books. Chic has written excellent mountaineering and skiing history books. Look for his PUSHING THE LIMITS book published 2000. It is the best book on Canadian climbing history - even better because Chic's descriptions of many of the climbs are based on his firsthand experiences of having climbed the routes. The magazine is in new condition, purchased by me directly from Chic Scott, the publisher. I purchased about 15 copies around 1995 and have kept them in storage since then, having sold about 1/2 of them over the years via my website. This example has never been read, but it has some shelf rubbing to covers (not bad.seems to be usual for this magazine), has no marks or writing on any pages, no tears, clean. It has glossy stiff paper covers, 72 pages, many b/w photos. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine (see description). Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine (see description). Photo Cover (illustrator). First Edition. ----------( 1st printing of the First Edition ) ---hardcover, a Near Fine example, a wee bit of light rubbing at tips ---in a lightly rubbed Near Fine dustjacket, non-authorial gift inscription on front blank endpaper, 440 pages. b&w as well as colour photos and maps, ---"This important new book tells the story of Canada's 200-year mountaineering history. Through the use of stories and pictures, Chic Scott documents the evolution of climbing in Canada. He introduces us to the early mountain pioneers and the modern day climbing athletes; he takes us to the crags and the gyms, from the west coast to Québec, and from the Yukon to the Rockies. But most importantly, Scott showcases Canadian climbers-the routes that challenged them, the peaks that inspired them, their insatiable desire to climber harder, to push the limits. ---Begin the trek through Canada's climbing history ---Learn about Swiss guides hired by CPR hotels who ushered in the glory years of first ascents. Continue through to the turn of the twentieth century when British and American climbers of leisure found themselves hampered by the difficulties of travel through the Canadian wilderness. Learn about the European immigrants of the 1950s who pushed the limits on the rock walls, and the American superstars who led the search for frightening new routes on the big north faces. Be there when British expatriates pioneer an exciting new trend in world mountaineering-waterfall ice climbing. Witness the popular growth of sport climbing, both on the crags and in the gyms. Finally, enjoy the story of home-grown climbers. Initially slow to take up the challenge, both at home and overseas, they are now leaders in the climbing world"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.///NOT SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE/// ---sizes are approximate (generally within 1/8 inch)------ Size: 8.75w x 11.25h Inches.
