Valerio Chimentelli (1620 1669) fu professore di letteratura greca nell'ateneo pisano. Gran parte dei suoi scritti rimasero a lungo inediti nelle biblioteche di Pisa e Firenze. Il "Marmor Pisanum", è la sua opera più importante e la storia di questa opera inizia con la scoperta di una iscrizione latina su di un marmo tombale riferentesi, secondo il Chimentelli, a uno scranno con due sedili: in essa l'Autore descrive compiutamente una scritta epigrafica in marmo rinvenuta appunto in un bisellio (il bisellio era un sedile doppio, destinato nell'antica Roma a personaggi di rango). Di particolare interesse sono le ultime 12 pagine, "De muscis odoris Pisanis", lettera datata Pisa 10 giugno 1655, erudito studio sulle mosche. L'eruditissima esegesi interpretativa che il Chimentelli compì fu premiata dal papa con il dono di una medaglia. Il Graevius ristampò questo saggio nel "Thesaurum antiquitatum Romanorum" (Lugduni Batavorum 1689, VII). Rara originale edizione edita in Bologna dal Benacci Vittorio Erede, completa delle tavole. Lavori di tarlo con usura e mancanze al dorso, una piccola spaccatura della pelle al piatto anteriore, normale ingiallimento dei fogli, ben conservato tutto l'interno del volume con le tavole. .
