Folio in sheets within printed paper wrappers with titles in red and black, in glassine. 33 x 25.5cm. Printed on Japanese paper. Illustrated with 16 colour etchings by Édouard Chimot. A near fine copy, with just a small mark to the rear of the glassine wrapper; the contents remain clean and crisp. The illustrator Édouard Chimot's (1880-1959) own hors-commerce copy of this sumptuous edition of the Belgian poet and writer Pierre Louÿs's (1870-1925) first novel depicting courtesan life in ancient Alexandria, originally published in 1896, containing an additional suite of etchings and an original drawing by the artist. Paris, Société Nouvelle des Éditions d'Art Devambez. Very good, binding fine, light to moderate foxing throughout. Appointed as artistic director of Les Éditions d?Art Devambez in 1923, Édouard Chimot (1880 - 1958) was at the forefront of the vogue for extravagantly produced livres d?art and livres d?artiste which gripped Paris throughout the 1920s. His own style of late-Symbolist nudes was characterised by depictions of those who were "subject to their deadly and delicious passions? (André Warnod), and he felt a particular affinity for Decadent authors such as Baudelaire and Verlaine, whose haunting texts his etchings so fittingly illustrated. The Wall Street crash of 1929 proved that life imitated art and the passion for collecting expensive limited editions proved to be a deadly one. The market for luxury books collapsed, and the publication of Parallelement in 1931 was the end of Éditions d?Art Devambez; the last gasp of the roaring twenties. Chimot never regained his position in the Parisian artistic and literary world. While his work slowly declined into puerile erotica, his place at the height of the glamorous world of Parisian publishing was almost entirely forgotten.

First edition thus, artist's copy number G of 15 copies on different types of paper reserved to the collaborators and signed by Chimot on the justification page. Édouard Chimot (1880-1959) was a French artist, illustrator and editor whose career reached its peak in the 1920s in Paris, through the publication of fine quality art-…printed books. His own artistic work occupies a characteristic place, and his editorial role was extremely important in bringing together some of the outstanding talents of that distinctive period in French art. With the Wall Street Crash of 1929 wiping out the market for fancy limited editions, the present work was the last of Chimot's productions for Devambez. A rare survival: Library Hub lists only 1 copy held institutionally, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. OCLC 458495941. Folio (325 x 248 mm). 23 full-page aquatint etchings in different states on 75 plates (including the extra suite of 23 plates in two states), some in bistre, with remarques, or in black; and 17 large in-text illustrations by Édouard Chimot. Near-contemporary red morocco by Trinckvel, gilt titles on spine, "ERS" tooled in gilt on front board, marbled paper boards heightened in gold, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers heightened in gold, original printed wrappers preserved, printed in red and black. Early ink inscription dated 1932 to one of the preliminary blanks. Light wear to extremities, light foxing throughout, a near-fine copy.

Loose and entirely uncut in the original printed wrappers; pp. [4, blank], [2, half-title and limitation], [2, blank], [2, title printed in red and black], 147, [3], 23 full-page etchings with aquatin…t (some colour-printed or tinted) in the text; spine of wrappers a little rubbed and worn, remnants of contemporary half-calf folder and slipcase; a few leaves with marginal blue ink spots.Privately printed, number XVI of the 23 copies on japon ancien reserved for the artist (total printrun 198 copies), with Chimot's aquatint etchings in the first state, second state printed in sanguine with remarques, the second state with remarques, printed in black, the final state, and one plate in all states (dossier), limitation signed by the artist, a few manuscript notes in the artist's hand on folder of the dossier.This set not only comprises the additional versions of the illustrations but in the dossier complet d'une planche all stages of the plate to Prologue d'un livre, including the copper plate, a first charcoal and bistre study, the pencil drawing for the etching, signed by the artist, an early proof of the etching combined with the text, altogether, apart from the copperplate and the print in the book, 14 different stages of this particular plate.The French artist, book illustrator, printmaker (exclusively etchings) and editor Edouard Chimot (1880-1959) rented a studio in Montmartre, haunted by 'jeunes et jolies femmes,' his models. He began to illustrate texts; however, the First World War interrupted his career. After the War he was able to rent Renoir's old atelier, where he produced etchings alongside decadent literature as well as Henri Barbusse. From 1923 to 1931, as artistic director of Les Editions d'Art Devambez he oversaw the production of many outstanding illustrated private press books but reserved some texts for his own art as etcher and printmaker, among them this collection of erotic poetry by the symbolist poete maudit Verlaine, which had been published first in 1889 and ever since has tempted book illustrators to publish their art alongside the poems. During the roaring '20s in Paris, Chimot became a central figure of the Jazz age with many connections to artistic and literary circles, including the Surrealist movement. He even embarked on film-making in 1924. Parallelement is his last French limited edition artistic book production; the Wall Street Crash of 1929 had eliminated the economic basis for such productions for a long time. He later settled in Spain and continued illustrating books.
