Through a comprehensive examination of original documents, the author reveals a consistent intent by the founders to create an institution of higher learning with both literary and theological departments. In contrast to prevailing narratives, the book presents compelling evidence that the institution's early leaders never intended it to be solely a theological seminary. Rather, they sought to establish an institution that would provide a comprehensive education accessible to students of diverse backgrounds.
