Original poster, measuring 14 1/2" x 11 1/2". Printed in red and black on card stock. Near Fine with minimal wear. Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. This poster was created for her 1972 presidential campaign, in which she was the first Black candidate to seek a major party's nomination--a story told in the recent miniseries Mrs. America. From the estate of Etta Moten Barnett (1901-2004) of Chicago.
Silver gelatin press photo of Shirley Chisholm receiving calculator in a patronizing attempt at humor.1980. 9" x 8" inches. Three white men present Chisholm, the first black Congresswoman , with a calculator as a joke the morning after her homestate New York took longer than Texas to count votes. Shisholm in a boldly printed dress holds one hand to her glasses, face bent toward the device with a half-smile as if trying to understand the gesture. The men laughing at the joke, the one holding the calculator appears to be waiting for Shisholm to get the joke. The background is a crowded venue with a radio broadcast sign visible on one wall, possibly a press event following the election results. Verso is stamped with Houston Chronicle library, August 1, 1980 and photographer stamp "Sam C. Person, Jr" . On verso red pen marks "John Hill, ex TX att gen[eral]", who is one of the men in the photo. Clean and bright image. Overall very good condition. Captures the complex dynamics of race and gender in American political life with an African American woman and icon navigating its center.
