In November 1985, several writers, including Joseph Pivato, Antonio D"Alfonso, Pasquale Verdicchio and Dino Minni thought a national conference to take stock and discuss future directions might be a good idea. [Conference held at Vancouver, September 15-19 1986] The Italian Cultural Centre… graciously offered its premises, the Italian Cultural Institute agreed to help, and an ad hoc Literary Committee quickly came together. The Committee decided to interpret the word writer in the widest possible way to include novelists, poets, playwrights, historians, film makers and critics. It also decided that the emphasis of the Vancouver gathering would be on literature. This collection of the proceedings contains most of the scholarly papers delivered, plus a sampling of round-table seminar presentations, in the three languages of the conference. The editors have arranged them under common topics: the ethnic viewpoint, literary criticism, poetry. As these proceedings show, the 23 writers (including two guests from Italy) who participated in the conference agree that (1) Italian-Canadian writing is more than immigrant literature, (2) Italian-Canadian writing is about to enter its second stage of development, (3) Italian-Canadian writing is expanding the tradition of Survival to include the tradition of the Journey, (4) literary criticism of Italian-Canadian writing should take more than a thematic approach, and (5) the options for tomorrow are varied. Madrina dell'evento Mina Gregori, celebre storica dell'arte italiana. "Una mostra per riportare Carrara ai suoi antichi fasti, anche dal punto di vista culturale". E' questo l'auspicio con il quale il professore Mario Ciampolini ha tenuto a battesimo venerdì pomeriggio a Palazzo Binelli la mostra "Pittura fra Toscana e Liguria nel Seicento" che lui stesso ha curato per la Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Carrara. "Non una grande mostra ma una mostra grande" ha sottolineato il padrone di casa, Antonio Pincione, presidente della Fondazione ricordando che le 24 opere messe a disposizione da istituti e fondazioni bancarie con sede a La Spezia, Genova, Lucca, Siena e ovviamente Carrara, non sono tantissime in termini numerici ma hanno un ruolo di primo piano nella storia dell'arte italiana. E per avere un'idea della levatura dell'esposizione è sufficiente scorrere l'elenco delle opere e degli autori in mostra: "Achille e le figlie di Licomede" e "La Meretrice scaccia il figliol prodigo" di Domenico Fiasella, "Le tentazioni di San Francesco" di Giovan Battista Casoni, Riposo nella fuga di Egitto" di Livio Mehus, "San Benedetto che scaccia il demonio" di Giovan Battista Vanni, "Sacra famiglia con i santi Giovannino, Anna e Giovacchino" di Giovanni Raffaele Badraccio, "Dedalo e Icaro" di Girolamo Riminaldi, "Venere e Amore si baciano" di Giovan Battista Paggi, "Madonna con il Bambino e san Giovannino" di Bernardo Strozzi, "Ritratto di gentiluomo" di un ignoto pittore genovese, ""Allegoria della Liberalità" di Valerio Castello, "Mosè fanciullo calpesta la corona del faraone" di Gregorio De Ferrari, "Frati capuccini a mensa tra rovine" di Allessandro Magnasco (il Lissandrino), "Ecce Homo" di Orazio De Ferrari, "Ritratto di gentiluomo" di Giovanni Maria delle Piane (il Mulinaretto), "L'Astronomia" di Pietro Ricchi, "Fuga in Egitto" di un ignoto artista romano, "La caducità del potere temporale" di Pietro Paolini, "La caducità della vita e del potere terreno" di Girolamo Scaglia e "Santa Cecila" di Girolamo Scaglia. Ventiquattro opere mai viste l'una accanto all'altra, abitualmente "riservate" agli occhi più o meno esperti dei componenti dei consigli di amministrazione delle fondazioni bancarie liguri e toscane e che grazie alla mostra allestita a Palazzo Binelli segnano il debutto di Carrara - avvezza sì alle esposizioni di alto livello ma solo per quanto riguarda la scultura - nel grande circuito delle esposizioni di pittura. Non a caso a fare da madrina all'evento è arrivata una "grande" della cultura italiana: a tagliare il nastro della mostra, insieme al sindaco Angelo Zubbani, è stata infatti Mina Gregori storica dell'arte, accademica dei Lincei e professoressa emerita di Storia dell'Arte moderna presso l'Università di Firenze. "E' una mostra che vuole localizzare i quadri sia nello spazio che nel tempo, come chiarisce il titolo stesso" ha spiegato l'illustre docente che ha poi ha sottolineato il ruolo centrale di banche e istituti finanziari. Grazie alla loro disponibilità economica giocano un ruolo di primo piano nel mondo della cultura, cosa che purtroppo - ha ricordato la docente - gli enti pubblici, con i loro bilanci sempre più risicati, riescono a fare sempre meno. E questa ipotetica partnership tra pubblico e privato all'insegna della promozione della cultura, auspicata dalla professoressa Gregori, è stata ben rappresentata all'inaugurazione di "Pittura fra Toscana e Liguria nel Seicento" dalla presenza, a Palazzo Binelli, del sindaco di Carrara Angelo Zubbani, del presidente della Fondazione Alberto Pincione e di Franca Conti che con la. Libro.
