First Edition blue Hardcover with white & orange printing on spine and DJ, 217 pp. F. Draco is pseudonym for Julia Davis. A novel of mystery, suspense and unnamable fear & terror. This book has my name (and place/date purchased, and another former owner's name (all in very small writing at top of ffep), edgewear at top 1/4" of spine, and some tabs of paper at bottom of text block (where untrimmed pages were originally joined, a common issue with these early US Rineharts). The mylar-protected, price-clipped DJ, like the text, was made of cheap paper and shows some chipping and creasing along edges. Overall, a pretty good copy of this old collectible.

[solid copy, corners lightly bumped, a couple of tiny dents in top edge of front cover; jacket is edgeworn, small closed tear at bottom of front panel, a bit of paper loss at top of spine, small tears at rear corners]. "Here is [Greene's] concern for the essential tragedy of man, his characteristic brilliance in describing the scene, his genius for suspense, his sympathetic treatment of his characters -- whether they be saints or sinners." (Greene himself, in a brief introduction, is less high-falutin', asserting that he's presenting these short stories (in a form that he had "never properly practised") "merely as the by-product's of a novelist's career." The first story in the volume, "The Basement Room," was the basis for the 1948 film THE FALLEN IDOL (identified in the book jacket blurb as "The Eyewitness," possibly an intended American release title?); another, "Across the Bridge," was filmed under that title in 1957 and again in 2001 as DOUBLE TAKE.

"Idwal Jones (December 8, 1887 November 14, 1964) was a Welsh-American novelist and non-fiction writer. Jones focused a lot of his writing on the beauty and population boom in California and the west. Jones was born in Merionethshire, Wales, to William W. Jones and Mary Catherine Hughes. He immigrated to New York in 1902. He studied mechanical engineering, which led to an interest in the California gold rush, and he moved to the state in 1911. He began his literary career writing book reviews for the San Francisco Chronicle, and later had his own columns in, The San Francisco Examiner "Rediscovering San Francisco" and "Passing By." He sold his first short story in the 1920s. He won a Newbery Medal Honor in 1937 for Whistler's Van." (from Wikipedia).
