Paperback. Condition: Very Good. It's 1:08 a.m. when Carrie's car breaks down on the highway somewhere north of Lake Superior. It's dark, the road is quiet, her cell phone is down, and she is alone. She took off from Toronto that morning, running from grief over the death of her boyfriend, and unable to cope with the truth about the events that led to it. The relief Carrie feels as a truck pulls up soon turns to fear after its driver offers her a lift. Frank, her would-be rescuer, is a line painter, putting lines on the road to stop people from being killed. But after Carrie gets in the truck, she starts to realize that this will be the road trip of her life--a trip of terror, transformation and forgiveness. Claire Cameron has created a unique portrait of Carrie, a young woman whose actions are driven by grief and shame, her personality a beguiling combination of na vet and streetsmarts. Frank is equally sharply drawn, his flashes of humour and tenderness disguising the wreckage within. Written in spare, unvarnished prose that brims with menace against the forbidding backdrop of a northern landscape, The Line Painter takes us on a riveting trip down a twisted road of memory and redemption.Smoke?I looked over. He held up two cigarettes. I had quit. It was all part of my campaign of the past few years to try and grow up. Quit smoking, drink less, no drugs, move in with boyfriend and play house, get a real job and wear a suit. I stopped short of wearing nude-coloured hosiery, but only just. It was my own sort of a personal temperance plan. If I could just suppress all my bad urges then . . . um . . . I'd forgotten what, actually. But Frank wasn't just asking me to smoke. This was quite a different thing. Frank was trying to forge a link. He was calling a truce. He was trying to bond. He was offering me a peace pipe of sorts, though packaged with a few more chemicals and a filter.I took a smoke and accepted Frank's outstretched lighter. I inhaled deeply. I never have any trouble starting smoking again and I certainly didn't this time. . . . I sat down on the shoulder a safe distance away from him.--from The Line Painter.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. It is widely known that Charles Dickens gave public readings of his works, and that those readings were enormously popular. Far less well known are the stories themselves; these were not, as is the modern fashion, taken verbatim from the published novels. Instead, Dickens trimmed, reworded, and re-shaped material from the novels to create stories that would be self-contained artistic entities. These concise "performance fictions," shaped in every way to be accessible to a broad audience, are in many ways an ideal introduction to Dickens's work for the modern reader. Four of the most successful of these short works have been selected for this volume, including "The Story of Little Dombey" (perhaps the most emotionally affecting of all the readings, and described by Dickens as his "greatest triumph everywhere") and the violent and suspenseful "Sikes and Nancy" (Dickens's overpowering performances of which were said to have contributed to his death). Provided in the contextual materials is a selection of reviews and contemporary descriptions that comment on Dickens's manner of performance and audience reception. A brief excerpt from Dombey and Son is also included, illustrating the extensive revision process that led to "The Story of Little Dombey.".…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Advance praise for Special Intentions Special Intentions reminds us of the importance of not simply praying for what we need, but for what others need. Jesus taught us to ask God for our daily bread, but he also asked us to love one another. Commending our friends and families (and co-workers, neighbors, acquaintances and even those who bother us) to the care of God is a key aspect of that love, and an important element of the Christian tradition. Claire Coleman's sensitive new work will help readers to more fully enter into this rich stream of the spiritual life. --James Martin S.J, author of My Life with the Saints If you've ever offered up a simple 'God help him' at the sight of someone less fortunate, then this book will resonate with your innate sense that prayers have power. Claire Coleman offers a graceful, easy way to benefit others with her beautifully written portraits of those in need. Take her advice, say a prayer for a stranger and make the world a better place. --Patricia Sheridan, Assistant Editor/Features, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette While Special Intentions is a beautiful meditative book for the person alone in prayer before God, it likely also will be will be an inspiration for those in prayer groups, and friends who come together to talk about their life's journeys. --Dianne M. Traflet, J.D., S.T.D., Associate Dean, Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, Seton Hall University Prayer is a personal experience, but sometimes we need a little reminder. Claire Coleman's Special Intentions is the perfect book to keep close at hand and close to the heart to reference, to inspire, and to share with others. --Amelia Grey, author of twenty-three books The] listings of special intentions are so global and yet personal, so ordinary and yet profound. --Sr. Joan Noreen, OLME, co-founder and director of Our Lady's Missionaries of the Eucharist Host, Eucharistic Journey, Eternal World Television, (EWT) Network Ms. Coleman reminds us that every one of us is, for very different reasons, in need of prayers. Her ability to lead us to pray for someone we suddenly notice, think about, and then care about--someone who we don't even know -- is truly a gift. --Dr. Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, president, Rosemont College, Rosemont, Pennsylvania.…
