Hardcover. Condition: Good. A G 8vo rebound vintage hardcover in a clear plastic dust jacket. Subtitled 'Reminiscences and Thrilling Incidents of the Romantic and Golden Age of the Great West, With a Graphic Account of Its Discover, Settlement and Grand Development.' Ex-library with limited treatments--i.e., pocket on the free front end paper; small sticker on the dedication page; faded stamp on the pages' top edge; clear tape-covered call letters label on the spine tale. Decorated front and rear paste-downs. Missing the frontispiece and the leaf that follows the completed list of illustrations (page xvi) and precedes the first page of text (page 19). With the exception of four blank front end pages (on two leaves), three rear text pages, and three blank rear end pages, the contents are also a bit age tanned. Still, the contents (671 pp.) remain fully legible, otherwise complete, and securely bound. The covers appear to be rebound in brown cloth with the original decorated burgundy cloth cut and affixed atop the new cloth. Any rebinding is not recent, however, as the edges are well rubbed, particularly on the exposed bottom edge and bottom corner of the upper board. The original cloth is also rubbed with dull gilt and at the head of the spine, some erosion. The upper board also has a deep impression mark the size of a cigarette burn hole. Still, given its secure binding and mark-free text, this is more than just a reading copy. Includes a clear plastic dust jacket but no paper dust jacket (if issued). **Extra charges to cover shipping costs will apply to an order requesting expedited and/or international shipping because of the size and weight of this book.

It recounts the epic journeys of pioneers who braved treacherous landscapes and hostile environments in their quest for gold and a new life. The author, a seasoned lawyer who experienced these events firsthand, offers vivid descriptions of the Pony Express, the first transcontinental telegraph, and the building of the first railroads across the continent, all of which revolutionized communication and trade. He details the perils faced by these early settlers, from encounters with Native American tribes to the dangers posed by outlaws and bandits. The book also explores the complexities of life in frontier towns, the rise of vigilante justice, and the darker side of westward expansion, including the tragic Mountain Meadows Massacre. This captivating account of the American West provides a unique perspective on the grit, resilience, and determination of those who shaped this vast and rugged territory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
