Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. A Very Good Plus copy of this scarce title published in 1884. Gently read. Interior has some foxing throughout. Slightly hinged at the contents page but very firmly attached. The Macpherson colour tartan page is loose. All 22 tartan illustrations are in bright vibrant colours. Red… boards are lightly bumped to extremities, some soiling and staining present to both. Double blindstamped rules to front and rear boards. Bright gilt titles to the front board. Spine is extremely sunned and brittle with some chipping and areas of loss. Laid in is a typed, hand signed letter from James Scarlett, MBE, and renowned expert on tartans explaining to the owner that the contents of "Sketches of the Clans of Scotland with Coloured Plates of Tartans" was based on a forgery. Scarlett was in fact the editor of a book denouncing the Vestiarium Scoticum as a fraud. Suspicions arose early in 1829 with Sir Walter Scott questioning the veracity of the authors and their claims. Who turned out to be Englishmen and not related to Bonnie Prince Charles at all……. Illustrations (illustrator).
