Su mala salud no impidió que a los 17 años se alistara en el Ejército en busca de una vida de acción. Sin embargo, el destino no le había llamado para la servidumbre y la grandeza de una carrera militar, y el año de 1741, durante la larga e ignominiosa retirada de Praga, contrajo una enfermedad pulmonar que acabaría con su vida cuatro años más tarde. Alentado por Voltaire, se desplazó a París para consagrarse a la literatura. Planificó un volumen que tituló modestamente Introducción al conocimiento de la mente humana. Y en 1746 publicó un pequeño libro que contenía algunos ensayos y una selección de sus máximas.
