Green cloth, elaborately decorated and letterd in gilt on frnt cvr & spine (vry mnr shlfwr, slght rubbng), an excellent copy, from the family library of Major John William De Forest (1826-1906), served with Sheridan during the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley, and was a noted American author and poet. First edition of this exceedingly scarce emblem book written and edited by Presbyterian and Methodist ministers -- an impressive example of Victorian American book production, w/ charming and occasionally macabre & grotesque illustrations of morality, virtue, vice, and more. Condition: Very Good. Green cloth with an attractive gilt decorated spine and gilt pictorial cover. Previous owner's name neatly to the front fly. Some wear to the head of the spine (see image). A nice copy with no defacements to the text. 6.25 x 9 in (16 x 23 cm).
