When rebacking this item, four small squares of manuscript, which had been used as lining, became loose, and I have preserved them in the back of the book, as they have been used in the past and may have some connection with the history of the book. The most scholarly 18th century edition, edited by Jean le Clerc. The Pervigilium Veneris is an anonymous poem of 93 trochaic verses, written some time between the 2nd and 5th centuries A.D. The poem combines material for a hymn to Venus, with a description of Spring and an explanation of why the festival (set in Sicily) is appropriate at the time (see: O.C.D.). The work ends with Ausonius' Cupido Cruci Adfixus. LITERATURE CLASSICAL LITERATURE- ANCIENT CLASSICS POETRY 18TH CENTURY LATIN LITERATURE.
