A souvenir view book printed for Kresge & Wilson, a popular Cleveland 5 and 10 cent store. The W. G. MacFarlane Publishing Co. Ltd., founded by William Godsoe MacFarlane (1870-1942), was a Canadian company with an office in Buffalo, New York, opened in 1905, that published souvenir view-books and between the years 1902 and 1908, thousands of postcards. He concentrated on publishing color and black & white view-cards of Canada, mostly of the Great Lakes Region, and of selective locations within the United States. In the first decade of the twentieth century the company's postcard business quickly expanded and it became a leading producer of Canadian cards. The company ran into financial difficulties, lack of capital in a falling market (the peaking of the postcard craze), and filed for bankruptcy in April 1908. In 1909 MacFarlane moved to Chicago where he was employed by the lithographers Edwards & Deutch, and through the 1920's and 1930's he continued publishing guides under his own name for the American Autochrome Company. Gift inscription on front cover. Wrappers worn at edges and soiled, several stains to first page, a good copy. (#167674).
