Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "À Monsieur le Baron Du Bourdie…u, Vice-Amiral, Sénateur &c., hommage respectueux de l'auteur, G. Cloué." A contemporary bibliographical note identifies the recipient as Louis-Thomas-Rose-Napoléon, Baron Dubourdieu (1804-1857), French naval officer and senator (with reference to Vapereau's Dictionnaire des contemporains). A scarce hydrographic pilot and sailing guide to the Sea of Azov, issued by the French Navy's Dépôt Général des Cartes et Plans de la Marine in the immediate aftermath of the Crimean War, during which French naval forces operated extensively in these waters. Prepared by the naval hydrographer Georges Charles Cloué, the work constitutes a detailed practical survey of the entire Sea of Azov and its approaches, based upon contemporary French naval observations. The text opens with an extensive description of the Strait of Kerch, the sole maritime gateway between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, including its channels, anchorages, tides, coastal landmarks, and navigational hazards. Four principal sections then examine the coastlines of the sea in systematic order: the eastern shore from Kerch to the Gulf of the Don; the Gulf of the Don itself, including Mariupol, Taganrog, and the mouths of the Don River; the southern Tauride coast from the Don Gulf to the Strait of Yéni-Tchesk, covering Berdiansk and the great spits and shoals of the northern Crimean littoral; and the western coast from Yéni-Kalé to the Arabat Spit, including Kazantip Bay, Arabat Fortress, and the Sivash lagoon system. The concluding section provides valuable general observations on prevailing winds, currents, seasonal ice, water-level fluctuations, fisheries, meteorological conditions, and the conversion of Russian and English measures into French equivalents. Particularly noteworthy are the detailed sailing directions for the principal commercial ports of the region, including Mariupol, Taganrog, Berdiansk, Kerch, Yéni-Kalé, Gheisk, and Temrouk, together with descriptions of anchorages, shoals, banks, river mouths, lighthouses, and coastal landmarks. The eight large folding charts and numerous coastal profile views substantially enhance the practical utility of the work, making it one of the most comprehensive French hydrographic accounts of the Sea of Azov published during the nineteenth century. The author, Georges Charles Cloué (1817-1889), was among the most distinguished French naval hydrographers of the nineteenth century. He later rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral and served as Minister of Marine from 1880 to 1881. The present copy, inscribed to a prominent French naval officer and politician during the Second French Empire Louis Thomas Napoléon du Bourdieu, constitutes an important naval association copy.
